Hello all

Posting for traffic as I tried some of the development threads and didn't find much

So my health visitor was here earlier

She said my dd has long leg longer than the other

She said there may be a strong chance she will need to wear a brace for months

Feel so upset by this
The paediatrician checked her over for an hour when she was two days old and she said all looked perfectly fine 😲😢😢😢😢😢😢😢

My dd's hip dysplasia was picked up at her 24 hour check and within a week or so she was in a soft Pavlack harness which sort of kept her legs in a frog position. It was difficult at first as she was in it for 23 hours a day and it could only be removed for a bath. She eventually was gradually weaned off it at about 7-8 months old and walked at 10.5 months ! It was tricky to get clothing to fit, trousers had to be big and baggy or long dresses. As she was wider than babies not in this fixed position, as she got bigger she struggled to fit comfortably in the pushchair. She had ultra sound scans monthly to check progress and then as she got older she had yearly hip Xrays. She is 16 now and no problems. The key is complying with the harness when they are tiny for the best chance of avoiding longer term problems. It was hard at first, the worst thing was seeing her struggle with wind and not being able to move her legs to relieve it. We had to spend many hours just nursing her upright on our chests. hope all goes well for your dd op.

@minipie

Hi OP

First, don’t panic, HV may be wrong.

Second, if your baby does have to wear a brace or a cast for a while it’s a pain but not the end of the world.

My friend’s baby had this and had to wear a cast. It didn’t overly bother the baby, it delayed her movement a little but she very quickly caught up once the cast was off. And hers was caught rather late, yours may not need a cast if younger.

Good luck

Thank yoh

And to all who took the time to respond xxxxx
