To ask what is the best low/non alcoholic red wine

CanIbeRio · 27/01/2022 13:25

After years of overindulging on red wine at the weekends I've decided I need to cut back. I love the taste and depth of a glass of wine....I know low alcohol won't touch the real deal but in your opinion which one comes closest? Thanks in advance

Honestly there are none! Sorry not helpful.

HW1989 · 27/01/2022 14:22

None. But I’ll follow in case anyone has found one. It’s what I’m missing most in pregnancy!

RampantIvy · 27/01/2022 14:23

None. If I want to drink low alcohol or alcohol free alcoholic drinks I find that A F beer is a better option.

CounsellorTroi · 27/01/2022 14:27

There are none. I agree with pp that AF beer is a better option.

moomee12 · 27/01/2022 14:29

All AF red wine is disgusting.

OperationRinka · 27/01/2022 14:30

None. Dark AF beer or cherry and cinnamon herbal teal is closest to that feeling IMO.

Blinkinname · 27/01/2022 14:32

None. Give up now before you waste time and money. That depth and taste is alcohol. Have a cup of tea

gogohm · 27/01/2022 14:36

None, sorry. I drink tonic water with a slice of lime if I don't want to drink

DrManhattan · 27/01/2022 14:39

Ribena

FetchezLaVache · 27/01/2022 14:41

None. Don't fall for any promises to the contrary, I have tried them all and they are all shit. Alcohol-free gin, on the other hand, is pretty good...

DaisyWaldron · 27/01/2022 14:45

They are all terrible, sorry. The alcohol free beer is really good, as are some of the spirit alternatives, and there are also good complex soft drinks (Fever Tree Blood Orange mixer is great) and kombucha, but I've never had an alcohol free wine that didn't end up down the sink.

Suzi888 · 27/01/2022 14:48

Red grape Shloer? Agree won’t really taste like wine though.
Better off having an actual glass of wine and adding water to it.

APerfectSky · 27/01/2022 14:51

Abstinence. Honestly, they're all awful, and I love red wine!

Like PPs have said though, alcohol free beer isn't too bad. Or a Nosecco type fizzy is marginally better that the red.

mindutopia · 27/01/2022 14:55

I would look into something else you enjoy in a similar way. I've never like any of the AF wines. Too sweet, it's hard to make a decent dry AF wine. I do quite enjoy Juke's (but they are expensive), but kombucha is nice (and not as expensive if you make your own). I actually quite like Seedlip Spice with tonic as the bitterness is better than overly sweet fake wine.

hivemindneeded · 27/01/2022 14:58

There isn't one. But what you can do is find a dark, rich flavoured red at about 14% and cut it one part wine to one part water, which brings the alcohol content down to 7%. My dad used to do this with Italian wines. The flavour comes through. Use a nice mineral water like Evian not UK tap.

Mayhemmumma · 27/01/2022 15:01

Only thing I like instead of wine is sparking water in a wine glass! But maybe that's more a white wine replacement

crankyhousewife · 27/01/2022 15:16

I just asked my husband who likes Lindmans. He used to really enjoy a glass of red wine so for him to drink it now that he's teetotal it can't be that bad.

CanIbeRio · 27/01/2022 16:23

Oh dear 😳....that's disappointing reading!! I'll give tge Lindemans a try otherwise maybe I need to switch to white and add fizz to make a spritzer!! Thanks all for your replies

Try the ultra low alcohol wines/dealcoholized wines. Far too many of the "alcohol free" wines are really just grape juice.

Gordons or Tanquerry (can't remember the spelling) are very nice gins especially with ice and a decent tonic.

The lagers can be very good especially the import stuff (there's one Dutch lager the local shop randomly carried for a while which was amazing. Damned if I can remember the name of it though. Damn)

The range of stuff out there has exploded in the last couple of years and is way better than the Becks blue or erm nothing choice of back in the day.

Otherpeoplesteens · 27/01/2022 16:39

As pp have all said, they are universally vile. I had to give up drinking for medical reasons for three months about twelve years ago and tried everything that The Alcohol Free Shop in Manchester stocked at the time. I do like a glass of wine but I'd genuinely rather go without. Beers are much better, but imported AF beer is better still (largely down to the legal definition of 'alcohol free' which, as you might expect, is different in the UK compared to the rest of Europe).

If it's to deal with over-indulgence of red wine on a weekend, buy yourself a 250ml carafe and use some self-control to make one bottle last three days.

BobBobbity · 27/01/2022 16:57

I drink a lot of AF beer and AF ‘gin’. Some AF fizz is palatable.

But wine? No. Red wine - no, tried some fairly expensive ones and they went down the sink. Actually unpleasant.

supermum87 · 27/01/2022 16:59

Mulled wine is lower alcohol than red wine.

DoodleBelle · 27/01/2022 18:07

I’m currently pregnant and really missing red wine! All I’ve tried have been terrible. Would agree with PP alcohol free beer can be palatable I like the peroni libre one it’s quite similar just a touch sweeter. Have had some success with alcohol free proseccos - nosecco is OK and freixenet is quite citrus heavy but nice enough. If I were you I would just look to reduce how much you drink of what you really like rather than replacing it with something you don’t really want unless it’s for medical reasons of course.

oncemoreunto · 27/01/2022 18:18

They are terrible, I've given up.
AF beer is better. Tonic water and AF gin if ok.

notanothertakeaway · 27/01/2022 20:49

I don't drink red wine, but have found three AF sparkling wines that aren't too sweet (1) Freixenet 0% (2) I heart zero and (3) Noughty by Thomson and Scott
