staff meetings outside of working hours

We are paid to work x hours per week. On top of this, management want us to attend weekly zoom staff meetings, which will not be paid for.

Is this normal?

No

Thorilicious · 25/01/2022 22:24

It's normal for companies to try and get away with stuff like this, but you are right to decline it.

laalaaland · 25/01/2022 22:24

Depends on the job. I've worked as a teacher where you get paid per contact hour, but with the assumption that that pay includes the planning and meetings too.

ANameChangeAgain · 25/01/2022 22:26

If its requirement that you attend then you should be paid for it. You need to get together with the rest of the staff to argue your case.

Freddiefox · 25/01/2022 22:34

No. I left a job for this reason

MondeoFan · 25/01/2022 22:35

No.my workplace hold staff meetings and we get paid for it.
The staff meeting is for work related stuff so they need to pay people otherwise why would people give up their free time

ODFOx · 25/01/2022 22:42

It depends if you are salaried or waged and if the flexibility works both ways.

trulyconfuseddotcom · 25/01/2022 22:50

Definitely not - needs to be in your working hours.

Tumbleweed101 · 25/01/2022 22:56

Depends on the job. Some are impossible to hold meetings in work hours.

Ericaequites · 25/01/2022 23:16

You should be paid for these hours spent in meetings.

zoeFromCity · 25/01/2022 23:54

Unless there is some specific arrangement, it isn't ok.
Specific arrangement example, as PP mentioned, teaching. At local music school lesson takes 45 minutes with 5 minute breaks between, teachers are paid by contact hours, and those unused minutes are expected to cover admin, stuff meeting and time spent on school concerts with their students.

Tee20x · 26/01/2022 03:17

Nope. Meetings should be held in work hours. Why should you attend meetings for free?

Ginandvomits · 26/01/2022 03:22

If you're paid hourly it does seem unreasonable to be expected to attend a weekly meeting. Ad hoc out of hours less so. If you're on a salary it may be an expectation of the role.

halloweenie13 · 26/01/2022 03:24

No and raise this via a union once you have joined, they can support you to ultimately receive any adequate compensation you need. If your contract does not state this then go through your union to state that until you will be compensated reasonably and fairly for the time, you will not be partaking (as it is not a contracted requirement).

halloweenie13 · 26/01/2022 03:28

@ODFOx

It depends if you are salaried or waged and if the flexibility works both ways.
I agree with this also though, if you are say on flexi hours on 42k a year then it's perfectly reasonable so long as it is contracted ie stated within contract extra may be expected or directly stated.
Mrbob · 26/01/2022 04:25

Very much depends. Any management job or specialist work it is probably expected especially in a time of a big project or crisis. For a “normal” job then no you should be compensated for it it time or $
