Rant alert! To be pissed off that employees feel the biggest brunt of covid

Pissed off as we all have Covid in the house. Trying to wfh while feeling generally shitty and also looking after a hyper 6 year old boy and a hyper 6 year old dog.

Employer still expects you to WFH with Covid, and while caring for a child.

I’ve just had enough: 2020 and 2021 was so stressful at my workplace due to massive changes: and having to do that while homeschooling a child and no support was bloody awful. My work have so little slack or support: you’re just supposed to “get on with it” and pay loads in stuff like buying home equipment, pay massive fuel bills etc, while they get to reduce their outgoings and see no financial hit. I’m just so fucking pissed off with it.

I think perhaps self employed people have been the worst hit! But sorry you are having a bad time.

Cherrybomb197 · 25/01/2022 19:24

@SeasonFinale don’t make me admit IBU in the first post !

Do you have covid?

Are you childcaring?

Your employer just seems to want you to do what they are paying for?

Yes it's understandable to be annoyed, but your options are to take sickness (if you are ill) parental leave if you need to care for your dc, or sadly suck it up and just power through.

Cherrybomb197 · 25/01/2022 19:26

@PrincessNikla yes and yes.

Just feels that they have had no negative impact and we employees have been sucking it up for nearly 2 years

I see it this way, you have extra charges heating, water, lighting and the work PC. Your office gets to turn of their utilities. If you're ill you're ill sounds like bad management to me.

Personally I'd be considering the trend of the great walk out and spend some time considering where else your talents can be better spent.

HandWash · 25/01/2022 19:28

Can you not call in sick if you're unable to work?
They can 'expect' what they like, but if you're feeling crappy and have no childcare then don't do it.

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 25/01/2022 19:30

I'm afraid I agree with the PP who said that self-employed people have been hit worse.

Millions of us had to close our businesses for months and we received little to no financial support from the government. Thousands of small businesses folded because of COVID.

Businesses are not in an easy position. They can't afford to have loads of people off work when they're not actually unwell. Absent staff cost businesses a small fortune.

There are very few winners here.

Cherrybomb197 · 25/01/2022 19:31

It’s awful, but I was jealous of many people being furloughed through Covid. It was just relentless wfh and looking after DS. This week has brought it all back to me (DS asking “have you finished work now mummy” broke my heart all over again). And I’m physically exhausted and sore all over (no cough or breathing issues)

Absolutely agree that self employed have had it bloody awful: no getting away from that.

I work for a large multinationals company btw. Not a tiny company. Shareholders are raking it in

If you have covid and are ill with it take the sick leave. Rest. Your body needs to heal.

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 25/01/2022 19:37

If you're unwell, you need to self-certificate yourself as sick and take some time off. They can't force you to work if you're unwell.

Cherrybomb197 · 25/01/2022 19:37

It feels like skiving as it’s probably only omicron which is really just a cold (except I’ve got pains all over my body which I don’t normally have)

There's no "its only omicron" is someone saying this to you? It can be brutal.

But then you're choosing to martyr yourself.

You have a job - you can take time off sick and still have your job to go back to. You're not doing yourself any favours by working when you're not well enough.

shouldistop · 25/01/2022 19:40

Call in sick

DontDoThatGeorge · 25/01/2022 19:41

Jesus, woman. Stop being a martyr.

Call in sick and take a week off. If it's a big company and you've been there a while you'll get sick pay.

Omicron is NOT a cold. You could very well make yourself extremely unwell by not resting now.

AlDanvers · 25/01/2022 19:42

You are choosing to not go off sick. So of course they expect you to be working.

I mean this kindly. If you are ill you are ill. You need to look after yourself.

Thistooshallpsss · 25/01/2022 19:42

Please sign off sick until you are better. And look into claiming tax relief for home working expenses. And your employer should be providing you with the equipment you need. Please take care and get what rest you can.

PrincessNikla · 25/01/2022 19:42

It's shit for everyone and it's ok to rant. But be kind to yourself, and take time off if you need it

DS asking “have you finished work now mummy” broke my heart all over again

You'd have that without covid

Cherrybomb197 · 25/01/2022 19:46

@PrincessNikla normally he’d be at school / wrap around care: so he wouldn’t be asking that. I guess it’s only a week or so (not months like the last couple of years). He’s been allowed to watch lots of telly and play computer games all day which we never normally allow.
