Of course you're not unreasonable to take time off sick when poorly.

Have you told them you're too poorly to work?

If you have then they're being ridiculous.

If you've not explained it clearly then you can't expect them to know, so you need to tell them that you'll be self-certifying until you're well enough to work again.

I hope you're feeling better soon :)

I was really hoping this pandemic would help change mindsets of employees and employers.

We need as a country to stop expecting people to work when not well enough. This of course needs to go alongside proper sick pay for all and scrapping 0 hours contracts.

I've got covid. Pretty much felt like a dose of tonsillitis. Any other time I'd have struggled through work. Got to this weekend and spent it recovering enough to go back to work.

However I have to isolate until Thursday at earliest dependent on 2 negatives.

I still felt unwell yesterday. Not unwell enough to work but having the day home has me at I feel much better again today. Still not 100% today but much better again.

If you aren't well enough to do the job you're employed to do then stay home. Your employer shouldn't be making you feel like you should attend. And even less so actually putting that in writing.

Just ring or whatever your absense policy is and state you aren't well enough to work.

It's a school, hit hard by covid so they are pressuring others to keep going...

Point out to them that you giving your cold/flu to other members of staff mean they will then also need to take time off to isolate and await PCR results?

itsgettingweird · 25/01/2022 15:48

Funnily enough I work in a school. They are often the worst for people feeling they need to attend and making you feel like you should!

Also hit hard by covid currently. 70% of my class tested positive over 4 days!

Thing is colds etc spread like covid. So don't go in if you aren't well enough and spread that around instead. Classrooms are live petrified dishes!

CallmeHendricks · 25/01/2022 15:51

I am off sick today and told them I wouldn't be in tomorrow either regardless of what my PCR said when it returned.
People were off work pre-covid and you have just as much "right" to be off now, feeling unwell, as someone else who may be positive but feels fine.

Picklesandbeans · 25/01/2022 15:52

@itsgettingweird so true, yes ours has high numbers too- do feel a bit of a fraud as not covid!

I missed a singing event on Saturday that I have been looking forward to for ages, as my social life slowly recovers. I tested negative, but still had a mildly sore throat and runny nose, so decided to keep whatever germ it was to myself! I know how schools can make you feel guilty, but in the long run, you're saving them from having to cover for all the people you could infect. Before Covid was even a notion, schools already had a list of other diseases which require isolation, for good reason.

Spiderysummer · 25/01/2022 16:06

I'm ill with cold and temperature and will not be going in if my pcr is negative. I couldn't physically do it. I understand the pressure as I work in a school but I wont be helping if I spread this bug to others.
