That travelling with a formula fed baby is really hard?

Bells3032 · 24/01/2022 20:11

Unless you go self catering somewhere in the UK.

Travelling with all the formula, bottles and something to sterilise the bottles with. Someway to heat and store water. Let's not include the buggy, the cot and all the extra stuff needed for baby. And a room big enough to accommodate everything.

We thought about going on a cruise out of Southampton so we could go somewhere warmer and have access to baby clubs etc without the stress of flying. But they all have showers and not baths unless you book the most expensive cabins which are a fortune.

Just don't know where we can go that's suitable and doesn't cost the earth

@Northernlurker

Babies don't like travelling. You are a parent now. Book a self catering holiday and eat out in family friendly places that you take the baby too. You can canoe up the Amazon when baby is a bit older.
With respect you're talking shite I travelled with my DD when she was a baby to Australia she was fine and seemed to enjoy it.

@Bells3032

What pouches is everyone talking about. I can see bottles but unless you use them all in one go they need refridgerating. And they're obv heavy if you want to fly
My DD took 40 cownagte ready made formulas to Ibiza when GD1 was 5 months 😁
Nutsohazelnuts · 24/01/2022 21:22

Yes, as PP are saying, just use ready made formula from the bottles. We never heated ours and it was fine.

Pre sterilise bottles for flights and put in ziplock bags.
Once at destination, use Milton tablets for sterilising.
You can buy inflatable baby baths. I got one in the shape of a giant rubber duck that my daughter loved.

4 weeks in I could barely get sorted to go for a walk let alone a holiday so I can see why it feels a bit overwhelming!

Lockdownmummy · 24/01/2022 21:30

Posted to soon....

But you will get into the swing of it with formula feeding and will be able to rationalise what you take. Also for a bit of context my 5 month old feeds 4 times a day and roughly a full 200ml ready made carton size feed which is a lot easier than a feeding on demand new born.

Echo all the advise on cold water sterilising and pre made formula

Svara · 24/01/2022 21:30

I travelled with a five month old. No clue on the formula as I breastfed but the rest is easy. I just coslept, used a sling, and I was used to taking him in the shower with me.

Serenschintte · 24/01/2022 21:30

Club med is quite good with babies. Otherwise have a good - lots of baby friendly places out there.
Kinder Hotels in Austria are excellent

MiddleClassProblem · 24/01/2022 21:30

We used oasis cold sterilisation bags so we didn’t need a microwave

Serenschintte · 24/01/2022 21:30

Have a Google - lots of baby friendly cottages in Greece etc

Yeah probably why the concept seems so overwhelming now. Just sterilising the bottles every day feels like a lot of work.

I guess as they get older they don't feed as often so it's probably not as bad as needing to sterilise 10 bottles a day

We got ferry to Spain when son was 4 months old. They had microwaves in the restaurant that we used to sterilise bottles when we were on deck, or we used tablets in the sink when were in our cabin. Staff were happy to fill up bottles with hot water also so you could take a flask. All very easy. They also provided a travel cot.

MiniPumpkin · 24/01/2022 21:42

We travelled a lot with dc1, took travel bottles abroad. I felt it was hard work carrying everything. Now dc2 is 7months and it will be even more tricky as he has cmpa 😩 we will probably holiday in uk until he hopefully grows out of it.

MovingHome22 · 24/01/2022 21:44

Ready made mini cartons and steriliser travel bags.

Sodullincomparison · 24/01/2022 21:45

Easiest holiday we had! Ready made bottles and access to a kettle for the bottles or sterilising tablets. We did camping in Europe, city breaks, and self catering.

Honestly not hard at all. Just takes a lot of space in your luggage.

MovingHome22 · 24/01/2022 21:46

The ready made cartons are 200ml OP.

AllYouCanEatBrestaurant · 24/01/2022 21:46

If you get ready made, make sure it's the same brand of powder, use before to make sure it'll be taken and take much more than you think you'll need just in case.

Lots of ways to sterilise on the go, even down to throw away bags and teats, again just use before hand so you know it'll be accepted.

Sodullincomparison · 24/01/2022 21:47

That was before she was one and then Covid struck.

larrythelizard · 24/01/2022 21:51

We went to Majorca when DS was 4mo. Booked an apartment in an AI place so we had access to a fridge.

We took a collapsible bowl and Milton tablets to sterilise bottles and took one box of powder and a couple of pre-made bottles but then went to the shop and bought more when needed. Same with nappies

There was a bath there but we went to Cornwall previous to that and no bath so gave him a sort of bath in the bathroom sink.

FlyingLemur · 24/01/2022 21:52

We took powder, thermos flask for hot water, small plastic bottles for cooled boiled water and a kettle to make the bottles. Also filled a small bottle with washing up liquid and took a bottle brush to clean bottles.

To sterilise we used Milton tablets and one of those plastic cereal containers as a cold water sterilising tank. We filled both the kettle and the cereal container with stuff to travel so they didn’t take up more room than necessary in our luggage.

Took pre-made bottles for the flights.

It seems really daunting, but it is actually fine, although forget the idea of travelling light ever again.

Like you, we had a premie, but we went abroad when he was 5 months and again when he was 9 months and it was fine.

I used cold water sterilising bags. Just hung them up with the bottles in them.

VelvetChairGirl · 24/01/2022 21:57

When I had my son 11 years ago you could buy cartons of ready done SMA, Hipp and the other one I cant remember the name of, also Boots sold big boxes of single use SMA bottles with a teet on them (the hospital used them too).

if I recall correctly SMA came in single use or 1 litre cartons, hipp came in single use cartons and the one I cant remember the name of that had a polar bear on the front had single use cartons.

also milton sold tabs and mini travel bottles of sterilizer.

are you telling me none of that is available now?

Bells3032 · 24/01/2022 22:00

The ones with teats are 70ml. They're the ones suggested to me on the first page are the 70ml ones.

can you not get a small bottle of milton and a collapsable bowl for camping, then you just need to take a few of your own bottles and powdered milk, everywhere has kettles, and I think that would take up the least space.
Nat6999 · 24/01/2022 22:16

I used ready mixed cartons & the microwave sterilising bags when we travelled with ds.

Snowcov · 24/01/2022 22:21

The ready to drink formula with teats will be slow flow. So great if you have a young baby (which you do) but very frustrating for an older baby normally using a faster flow teat! I travelled abroad a few times when my older DD was under 1 (pre Covid) Used to order lots of the 200ml ready made bottles (like 30 plus) to airport Boots or Superdrug and pack them in my hand luggage. I would take my own sterile bottles for flight and bottle brushes microwave sterilising bags for use once there. . So it can be done but it is pretty annoying to be honest. YANBU
