How do you resist the urge to eat a lot of a dessert when you first bake it?

The first day I bake a dessert is the hardest day to resist eating a lot, because I want to try all the different textures. So, let me have a corner piece to taste the crunchy edge... a center piece to try the moist, gooey part... let me have that slice because it has the most nuts/chocolate chips etc. I also think to myself, I should take advantage while the dessert is fresh and warm, compared to the next days when I'll be reheating it in the microwave.

Is anyone else like this? How do you handle this urge and more evenly spread out the consumption of the dessert?

I don’t resist 😂😂

Instead I’ll just not eat my next meal or have a smaller portion if I’m full of cake.

OneTC · 24/01/2022 11:56

Depends what it is

I can't make a cake and not eat it straight away, even though cake mostly isn't meant to be warm, warm cake is possibly the best thing in the world ever, and it has a super crispy little crust on it that you don't get if you let it cool and eat it later

Now I really want a cake

Laufeythejust · 24/01/2022 11:58

I do this too. Plus tasting the batter to get an idea of what the end product will be like.

I end up with half a batch of brownies, me covered in chocolate and feeling sick. Still do it every couple of weeks though Blush

I had to stop baking because I just ate it all. I'm not even joking - I'm a pretty good baker and I used to do it all the time a few years ago but I have problems with binge eating so I just had to stop Sad

Haha the struggle is real! I do try to bake low carb desserts (so using almond or coconut flour and sugar free sweetener) but even then, I know I shouldn't be consuming too much of them because they still won't be high in nutritional benefit.

@Iggly ideally I wouldn't have to cut down on my next 'healthy' meal but I've done this before, needs must!
@amusedbush I completely get this approach. I think the issue is, I want dessert anyway, and surely it's better for me to bake it than buy it as buying it will have more unhealthy ingredients or much higher quantities of them.
Yes I LOVE that crispy crust @OneTC!
@Laufeythejust you're not the only one, brownies are the hardest to resist!

I'm terrible for doing that - I make a nice banana loaf and every time I go to to the kitchen it just jumps into my mouth

itwasntaparty · 24/01/2022 12:35

Very very rarely bake, I can't be trusted not to eat it all

NightmareSlashDelightful · 24/01/2022 12:39

Yes, I have this. So I just don't make desserts very often.

Similarly, cakes. I love baking cakes, I find it very meditative. But there's only two of us, and DH isn't a cake person really. So I end up with a massive cake, which will invariably go off or at least dry out within a few days, a week at best. I have a slice, maybe two, and then it just sits there because I don't want to eat a big slab of it every day (personally).

It feels like a waste of cake and this makes me sad.

Make half the recipe and buy yourself some smaller cake tins!

If the recipe has one egg then you may have to whisk it, weigh it, and scoop off half. Otherwise it's straightfoward to halve.

This is why we only have a dessert on Christmas Day Grin

Dixiechickonhols · 24/01/2022 12:45

I rarely bake as I eat it. Some things freeze ok.

MaizeAmaze · 24/01/2022 12:50

I've had to tell thee kids we can only bake stuff I don't like.
Unfortunately DS2 and I have very similar taste. While DS1 munches tealoaf and carrot cake, DS2 is not impressed, and is requesting millionaire's slice...
2kg down tho!

Recipestotry · 24/01/2022 13:57

@thisplaceisweird I second this! @NightmareSlashDelightful you can halve the recipe or even make a mug cake if you're still craving something sweet but single serving.

@MaizeAmaze makes sense, I really like the therapeutic aspect of baking so enjoy doing it even if it's not my favourite dessert. Although poor DS2 Smile Very well done on your weight loss by the way, hopefully you reach the weight you want!

Any kind of cake with fruit in it or that's spiced in any way will be eaten warm out of the oven. Chocolate cake can cool and be frosted and filled. Fruit cakes can be eaten immediately

OneTC · 24/01/2022 14:02

Me and my friend used to quite regularly set out to make cakes or biscuits and not make it past the batter or dough stage Grin

cobblers123 · 24/01/2022 14:09

Yesterday I made shortbread, I ate 4 pieces as soon as it was cool enough and today there are just 4 pieces left from around 24 pieces originally cut.
I can't seem to help myself whatever I bake or make. It's why I probably won't bake anything else for about 3 months at least.

This is the saddest thing I have ever read. Seriously?
TheLazyBeagle · 24/01/2022 14:36

Why sad?! It’s just not something I really think about, desserts aren’t a necessity! I tend to prefer savoury food anyway, DH doesn’t like puddings and the children have fruit after their dinner if they’re still hungry. It’s only if I bake something that I can’t leave it alone, so I don’t bother!
