Not to understand why my face looks so awful in pictures??

Lighthearted!

I don’t think I look too bad when I look in the mirror. In fact, when I make an effort and put a bit of make up on I actually think I have quite a nice face. But I have never ever in my whole life seen a picture of myself where I think I look good.

Seriously, the few times I have attempted to take a selfie have made me quite depressed with me asking myself “ugh, is that really my face? Do I really look that bad to other people”

I don’t lose any sleep or anything over it but… what is the deal??

Same here

@hangrylady

I always think this. I'm so very unphotogenic (is that a word)? I think I look decent then see a photo and am horrified. I think I may have some sort of reverse body dismorphia, going round thinking I'm an absolute babe but actually with a face like a bag of spanners.
Sorry @hangrylady but this did actually make me LOL Grin

I like to think I'm just uniquely unphotogenic. Obviously I look gorgeous in real life but it just so happens that in photos I look jowly and squinty eyed.

Realistically however, I quietly accept that photos probably are a fairly accurate representation of how I 'really look'. One of the few good things about lockdown is that I've got more used to seeing my mug on camera in Zoom calls, so I'm no longer quite so shocked about how heejous I look in photos.

I think part of the problem is that I subconsciously 'pose' when looking in the mirror. Chin up, lips plush, eyes wide open. But then when I unexpectedly catch sight of my mug when passing a mirror or shop window in the street, that jowly creature is the real deal. Probably.

My ex is a photographer and when we got together he was like “you’re so beautiful, I can’t wait to take photos of you”.

A year on and a million hideous photos later, his response when I was looking through his phone at our holiday photos and saying “god I’m so ugly”, was to say “you’re not UGLY, you’re just not photogenic 🤣🤣🤣🤣”. He’d finally accepted a decent photo of me was impossible.

But yeah, while I’m not god’s gift I definitely scrub up ok and I’ve always been regarded as attractive, but point a camera at me and my face just does something weird 🤷‍♀️

Silversprinkles · 23/01/2022 21:39

I haven't updated my social media profile pic in about 5 years as that was the last decent photo I've seen of myself - and it was a fluke, didn't know they were taking one. If a camera is pointed at me I freeze and can't relax.

Sweetener12 · 24/01/2022 09:24

I can't call myself photogenic either and there are very few photos I actually like and I use them as profile pics everywhere. Some photos are not quite bad and they become nice after throwing a filter on them or adding some Photoworks effects. There is also a program that turns your photo into a glamour shot, so maybe try that? It doesn't bother me a lot too but it would be nice to look great in pictures more often than not.

@villainousbroodmare

I work with a lady who has a very pleasant face in real life, really looks nice. I have seen photos of her and taken photos of her (as well as other staff) for our website and they are all appalling. I have no idea why. I always take about a dozen to use the best one, and tell her it's much better to look lovely in real life than fake lovely in a photo.
Do I work for you? Company name beginning S?

"I feel the same. For some reason I rewatched our ring door bell video of me walking upto our door. Am absolutely horrified not only with how I look but how I walk! Potato stomping up the path!"

"I always take horrible photos, my face does this weird expression thing whenever a camera is pointed at me, a cross between pain and constipation. *"

Gosh this thread has made me laugh! Thank you folks and yes, I feel your pain! 😅

My work photo is hideous. Really bad. But we have to have one online and I just don't take a good photo. My face is very asymmetrical and at a push you can get a just about acceptable picture if I look a bit to the side, but a face on ID style photo is like something off crime watch.

villainousbroodmare · 24/01/2022 18:07

NutCheeseBag no, but I just know you are an absolute fox in real life despite your disappointing pics. Grin

You're welcome 🤣 I think my issue is approaching 50 next year and quite come to terms with how my face and body is changing 🤣 I'm not going down without a fight! 🤣

Lounginginmanchester · 24/01/2022 22:41

I'm the same and so's my mum. Someone once said to me it's because you have a beautiful aura. People can see aura's but cameras can't. Cheered me up op. I'm sure you look lovely in real life and it's just the cold clinical camera not capturing it. (Or perhaps for me the fact that I always seem to have my eyes closed Grin)

cakewench · 24/01/2022 22:59

Oh pictures can absolutely lie. I’m the opposite of OP: jowly with an epic resting bitch face, but if I am given warning that photos are being taken I know exactly how to angle my head and smile big. I look amazing in some photos, to the point where people don’t recognise that it’s me Grin My Facebook picture looks nothing like me in real life.

If I could choose, I’d definitely pick your way around, OP!

I thought of this thread today. I saw a photo and a video of myself from the same event. The photo I looked horrendous, as usual, but in the video I looked much better as I was moving my head around.
