To throw away the jam?

I find it difficult to throw stuff. Hate waste.

Last year my friend made me a massive jar of homemade jam as a random gift. I was obviously grateful and took it hoping DH would eat it as I don’t eat stuff like that. DH ate some on the first day but hasn’t touched in since. It’s still in the cupboard!

AIbU to Chuck the jam (and it’s jar) away or should I try and at least clean the jar out to give back to her?

How long does jam even last? Wondering if I could force it onto my mum

Do not give your mum opened, year old jam!

ofwarren · 23/01/2022 13:43

Empty it into the bin and put the jar in your recycling OP!

Fallsballs · 23/01/2022 13:43

Let the jam go

sadpapercourtesan · 23/01/2022 13:45

Oh FFS, I know "I hate food waste!" is the new mantra, but sometimes the most appropriate destination for unwanted, old, unsafe foodstuffs really is the bin. Even to consider foisting on your mum is preposterous.

Jam lasts until it goes moldy, tbh even if its moldy you can scrape it off and the stuff underneath is fine (in things like jam the mold is growing on the surface and doesn't penetrate at all), but that's a step too far for me tbh.

But if no one is eating it, there is no point in keeping it!

DoTheMerengue · 23/01/2022 13:45

If it’s been in the cupboard for that long I’d let it die with dignity.

I usually fridge open jars of jam and marmalade.

LoseLooseLucy · 23/01/2022 13:45

Is it a fancy jar? If so I'd probably give it back, but I'd bin the jam.

RunnerDuck2020 · 23/01/2022 13:45

Has it not gone mouldy by now, having been opened a year ago?!

tealandteal · 23/01/2022 13:45

Have you looked in the jam recently? Surely it will be mouldy? I’m not very strict on use by dates but homemade jam that has been open for a year and can’t have been that amazing if no one has eaten it is not worth the risk. Bin the jam, recycle the jar.

Pikaso · 23/01/2022 13:47

It’s only January, she made it last year (as in 4 months ago)

If it's been opened I wouldn't try and palm it off on someone else. Whether you return the jar or not I think depends on the type of jar, some are intended for repeated use so I would ask your friend if she wants it back. I would also tell her it took so long to use the jam up (a little white lie) because you're not really a jam household, hopefully that will put her off bestowing you with more.
