advice on inheritance and esa

so im being left my mothers house after she passed away and im on esa once my mothers estate has been sorted out id lke to sell up and buy another property due to personal reasons i wondered if i did this how universal credit would see it as they might take the point of view that if i sell house i have that money to live on and i wouldnt need esa anymore so wondered if anybody could advise

Yes it will be affected. You would be able to put a new claim in once the amount in your bank is below the savings threshold.

The amount of savings your household has will affect the money you receive from means tested benefits. This means a lump sum of money, for example from an inheritance, can affect the amount of means tested benefits that you are entitled to.

If you are buying a house to live in the inheritance money will be disregarded for 5 months but you do need to inform DWP as soon as you receive the money. If after buying a house you are left with between £6,000 and £16,000 this will impact your benefits. Anything over £16,000 will end your claim
