To complain about receptionist

TEH82 · 23/01/2022 11:19

So yesterday I ate something while out in my car (piece of fruit) and my eyes instantly swelled up. I was 2 mins from local minor injuries so went there and the bell to be let in. By this time my breathing was rapid and I was dizzy so I rang the bell again as was scared. The receptionist come out and shouted at me for ringing twice between gasps I said I have previous history of severe reactions (never with this fruit) and my chest was tight and it’s hard to breathe.
The receptionist tutted and let me in and told me to sit down and went back to her desk and started discussing her coffee break with another receptionist. The panic and sense of doom had set in so I got up and walked through to where I knew the nurses were and the receptionist shouted me to sit down and wait my turn. Thankfully the nurses were amazing and one look at me they put me in resus, gave oxygen, 1 min observations and needed 2 doses of adrenaline as airways were closing and my arms locked and were burning where I didn’t have enough oxygen in my body.
I am just upset the way the receptionist was if I hadn’t walked through it’s could of been a very different outcome

Blimey, please do complain. That's not on. The receptionist was absolutely wrong in that situation! Should have got you triaged straight away. Did you say anything to the nurse? I do think it needs escalating.

theotherfossilsister · 23/01/2022 11:26

Yes, that's terrible. Please complain

PuppyMonkey · 23/01/2022 11:26

At our local walk in, it’s a nurse that greets you at the door and asks what’s wrong and does quick temp check due to covid etc. Before you even get inside.Confused

TEH82 · 23/01/2022 11:28

I didn’t have time to say anything as they got an ambulance to transfer me to the main hospital and I was shaking and could barely talk due to the effects of the adrenaline.
The nurses were amazing and saved my life in minutes for what I am very grateful- but where she sat me she couldn’t even see me so if I hadn’t walked through could of been so different as there was no one else waiting to be seen. The whole incident has scared me which I know is normal and I have had to be referred for allergy testing and have 2 epi pens but i feel the receptionist could of had some die because she wanted to talk about their break

Resus at a minor injuries?

MermaidEyes · 23/01/2022 11:30

Are you at my surgery or is it all doctors receptionists who are rude and shouty? Definitely complain. Hope you're better now and you avoid that particular fruit in future!

Pleaseuniverseplease · 23/01/2022 11:31

Complain. Definitely.
She's in the wrong job.

KarmaStar · 23/01/2022 11:33

Complain that is absolutely unacceptable.
Hope you're feeling much better now.💐

TEH82 · 23/01/2022 11:34

It’s a small local accident treatment centre so always has one DR and nurses in but not 24 hour is like 8-10 so I have just always called it a minor treatment centre - obviously carry adrenaline etc has X-ray dept and plaster room but isn’t the ‘main’ local hospital

Definitely complain.
I have worked as a medical receptionist- it’s hard. Very often you think your doing the right thing and you then get moaned at or shouted at by the drs and nurses. The drs and nurses will be lovely to the patients face but behind the scene they can be vile to the receptionist.
I would find receptionists would be rude to
Patients sometimes out of fear of being yelled at by medical staff.

I would still complain though but just seeing it from another angle

TheFutureIs · 23/01/2022 11:45

I would complain, but also why didn't you self administer your epipens?

QuizzicalEyebrows · 23/01/2022 11:48

Bloody hell yes you absolutely must complain. I'm sure the nurses who treated you probably have already.

Oblomov22 · 23/01/2022 11:53

Definitely complain.

AutumnLeaves21 · 23/01/2022 11:59

This is awful! I’m a HCP and I’m really shocked. Definitely complain. Hope you are ok now x

TurquoiseDragon · 23/01/2022 12:15

@TheFutureIs

Maybe OP has only had them as a result of this incident.
whatmagicword · 23/01/2022 12:20

Yes I would complain, half of receptionists think they are doctors!

Itsalmostanaccessory · 23/01/2022 12:22

Yes. Complain. Contact your MP as well. Receptionists behaving like this might be fee and far between but they need to come down on it like a tonne of bricks every time.
I'm always reminded of this story when I hear things like this and I get so angry.

listsandbudgets · 23/01/2022 12:24

I have no medical experience but surely as soon as you said you were struggling to breathe alarm bells should have started ringing. After all it's a fairly fundamental issue

TyrannosaurusRegina · 23/01/2022 12:25

Absolutely complain, this could have had life altering or fatal consequences. The next person may not be as proactive as you were.

TheAverageUser · 23/01/2022 12:27

Definitely complain, you could be saving someone in the future. So glad you're ok and had the mind to walk in

girlmom21 · 23/01/2022 12:29

Definitely complain. If you didn't know where the nurses were the outcome could've been very different.

Hapoydayz · 23/01/2022 12:30

Definitely complain. You could have died due to her non action. I don't get why people like that go for these types of jobs. Hope you are feeling better.

Resus at a minor injuries?
Hardly the point of the thread is it?

Yes thats terrible. 100% complain.

Mischance · 23/01/2022 12:31

I am afraid you will have to complain - your life was at stake. The next person might not be so lucky to be saved. I am very glad to hear you are ok now.

If the toddler was that sick they shouldnt have been at a GP surgery. A+e is a very different environment.
