To ask for replacement for item broken by M

I’ve been really unwell for the past few weeks and the isolation has been getting to me so my mum came round tonight for some company.

I’ve been in bed a lot as I’ve been ill and it’s where I feel most comfortable and I moved the living room tv to my room during recovery. So we decided to watch a film in my room.

My mum is a larger woman and when she came back from the bathroom she slammed down on my bed, snapping six of the wooden slats of a king size bed. She’s embarrassed and apologised and left shortly after.

The whole thing has just completely collapsed, I don’t think it’s repairable. We were both slightly shocked and not much was said.

I imagine tomorrow we’ll discuss it but how to approach it delicately? I’m a single parent and a low earner and I definitely can’t afford to replace it just now. AIBU asking her to pay for it or at least contribute?

My husband regularly breaks the plastic bits that hold the slats in, on our bed. He's plus size, and forgets this happens. He puts all his weight on one slat to move or get up and we just hear a ping or crunch. He's had to buy spare slat holders on eBay.

I agree that the slats can break easily. My friend broke some just turning over in bed!

New slats snd pls think more kindly of your poor mum. No one likes being larger and she won't always be around? Good luck with the slats.

If you can’t get replacement slats, have you looked on Facebook market place for bed frames they quite often come up around me for under £50

We got replacement slats from Amazon, very reasonable and good quality

We've replaced the odd slat on our old bed. My husband is also someone who has to jump into bed! 🙄

I've had a better look this morning and the bits that hold the slats in are broken too. Had to drag the mattress into the hall to sleep on last night.

I think it can be fixed but what am I looking for on local FB pages? A joiner? Handyman?

As others have said you can get slats if the main slot is broken dependent on the bed your need to replace.

A good joiner or handyman should be able to do it but my joiner changes £250 per day plus materials so you may well be better of with a new bed.

Your mother needs to pay, even though it was qn accident- she broke it and you can't easily afford it replace it.

My DB used to sit down this way and it drives me nuts!!!
He isn't even that big but used to essentially collapse or throws himself onto my sofa and
would see it vibrate and hear it groan when I very nicely asked him not to do it he got incredibly pissy with me. I was clear if he broke it he would pay for it. More pissness and a 50/50 sit to hurl self on sofa ratio followed.
However, in the last couple of years his now ex wife has trained him out of it and he is able to sit normally. Thank christ

Happened to us . My partner put a sheet of ? OSB board over bed base. It's still holding

Queenfreak · 26/01/2022 08:05

You don't need a handyman or joiner to replace the slats of the holders. They usually just clip in.

If you post a photo, we might be able to help find the right holders
