Has anyone taken singing lessons?

I don't think I can sing but I also don't think I'm totally beyond teaching. I want to do some things that push me outside of my comfort zone so I signed up to singing lessons.

Has anyone done this? What can I expect and did you go to an OK singer to average / good?

My dd started going to singing lessons as a teenager. It was only supposed to be a few lessons in the beginning, but she has been doing it for a couple of years now! She is naturally musical, I think, and had a nice singing voice before but no knowledge of technique and zero confidence.

The lessons have helped her enormously, both in terms of the actual singing and in terms of how she feels about it. She is confident enough to sing in front of anyone these days. Her range has expanded significantly and she knows how to breathe properly, how to use her voice etc.

Her teacher seems to teach quite a lot of adults, so I don't think you would be unusual. Go for it!Smile

Another one watching with interest. I don’t want to be a great singer just good enough to have the confidence for karaoke and carol services etc.

I loved to sing along at home but ex constantly told me I was a terrible singer . I joined a work choir which was for everyone and really enjoyed it and I could hide in the crowd. One day I had to sing with only one other woman. I was petrified and totally shocked when the choirmaster told me I had a really nice voice ! It definitely improved with practice. Go for it OP .

I was always really embarrassed about singing. I used to mime ‘happy birthday’ in groups because I didn’t want to ruin it. I have a New Year tradition that every January I do something that scares me. So one year I booked a block of ten 1:1 singing lessons. She was brilliant- really put me at ease. There was a lot about breathing and projection and stuff, but actually it was mainly about getting my inhibitions out of the way and enjoying myself. At the end she really encouraged me to join a choir, and it has been brilliant. I made lots of new friends, and singing is a real source of pleasure in my life.

Singing is like being an artist it's a gift. I don't think it's something you can be taught. If you're tone deaf you're never going to have a voice like Vera Lynn no matter how much money you spend on lessons.
This is the biggest load of rubbish I've heard. Being tone deaf to is incredibly rare. If you can recognise a tune you are not tone deaf. Pretty much anyone can learn to carry a tune and sound pleasant enough to others much like anyone can learn to draw . Obviously only some people can be artists and have real talent but almost everyone can learn to draw or sing just so that they can enjoy the process . Singing is real fun and makes people happy to do, you don't need to a fantastic singer to be able to have that in your life

@OneRingToRuleThemAlle How did you find your teacher?

ZenNudist · 23/01/2022 10:44

I really improved from joining a choir. Also you'd learn to sing a particular song so can practice throughout the week. Can you read music? I would go for it with lessons if you have the time.

I sent an email to a local music shop, who offer lessons on the premises. I pay £17 per week for half hour 1-1 lessons.

@OneRingToRuleThemAll that's a pretty reasonable price.
