Sorry - don't know where to ask this although I know it's not an AIBU.

Adult passports issued Oct 12. Expire Feb 23. Want to travel to the US in July/August - which would only just leave the usual 6 months valid (according to expiry date) on our return before they expire. But I read somewhere that the 6 months is taken from the date of issue (ie October this year), rather than the date of expiry that the passport is actually saying.

Am I being daft (happy to be told I am). Am really confused, and have got time at the moment to renew if necessary. Thank you.

I think I've read that too. A passport is valid internationally for 10 Years and the last 6 months is taken to be those last 6
Months within the 10 Years from the date of issue.

Even if the expiry date on the passport is longer.

KirkstallAbbess · 22/01/2022 15:39

I think you are right - valid for ten years from the date of issue. I think this issue is for pre-2018 passports only.

The details for USA on the .gov website says your passport only needs to be valid for the duration of your stay so you don't need 6 months remaining

You might be thinking of travel to other countries but it doesn't say 6 months for USA

You don’t need six months for the USA. My dd only had about three weeks left on hers last time we went.

Oh fantastic - thank you everyone. I did see that we can at least renew our passports online, rather than having to visit one of (in our area) the dwindling number of post offices that do them. Like most, we definitely need a holiday to look forward to.
