Cleaners - am I expecting too much?

For context, I have a newish build 4 bed house with hard floors everywhere except the stairs.
House was built in 1989 so probably a bit bigger than newer builds but I deal with the sitting room so cleaners are not required in there.
So: Entrance hall (wood), large kitchen conservatory and dining combined (tiled), games room (laminate), tiny utility (tiled) wc (tiled)
Carpeted stairs
Bedroom with bamboo floor, two bedrooms with LVT, 2 tiled bathrooms and an office with laminate. Bamboo landing.
All I ask my cleaners to do - literally - is the floors, nothing else. I follow my own method for the actual cleaning but I always run out of steam/time for the floors, hence getting cleaners in.
I was initially told one hour then told that wasn't long enough, so I went up to 1.5 hours. I pay £13 an hour.
I was clear when I booked the weekly clean that I wanted the floors to get a good deep clean.
To my dilemma. The floors are not getting a good clean. They are getting a very quick clean and I am not happy about it.
The cleaners never move anything, they clean around things. So rugs are not lifted (even at the edge) they are just hoovered then mopped around.
My daughter has a makeup trolly and clothes rail, both on wheels, they are just cleaned around.
They never clean under beds, vanity units (with gaps at the bottom) or bedside tables (again with gaps) we have a stool we use as a table which is so light you can pick it up with one hand, but they don't, they just hoover round it.
Sofas are never moved to clean under.
All of the floors have build up of dirt in corners and thresholds because they just slop the mop around and pay no attention to detail.
There are a couple of narrow bits in our bathrooms - bedside the toilet and beside the shower and you can see a line of mop grime where they have stopped mopping when the mop doesn't fit.
I have complained twice to the supervisor who has sorted it for a couple of weeks then things slip back.
I have also had to complain that they were flooding my floors to the point that the laminate was lifting at the edges as they use a mop and bucket.
Recently, they have even stopped doing their full time and have left after half an hour (2 cleaners, so 2 x 30mins = 1 hour).
When I pointed thus out to the business owner she just said she would adjust my invoice!
So AIBU here? I am inclined to ditch them and pay a non agency cleaner 2 hours at £10.50/hr and see if they are, any better.

I'd get new cleaners.....!

Tripptrott · 22/01/2022 15:01

It sounds like what you are asking is very specific. Can you invite a number of different cleaners for a trial? There will be a cleaner out there who gets what you are asking, but not all will.

Suzanne999 · 22/01/2022 15:03

I think with moving so much, putting each piece back would take 2 hours. It sounds like a large space. I think one independent cleaner would provide consistency and you can build a working relationship with them.

Chailatteplease · 22/01/2022 15:05

YANBU.
I despair with cleaners, on my 5th one and they all haven’t done a thorough enough job and all leave early (despite telling my current cleaner that’s the reason I was getting rid of my last one, as I can see the times on the doorbell 🙄)

FingersofFish · 22/01/2022 15:46

I think be clearer with a single cleaner? For example you have just complained about them using a mop and bucket on laminate (I agree, risky) but what are you expecting? I suspect the cleaner thinks a deep floor clean every week isn't needed so you will literally need to set it out in writing what you want.

Luredbyapomegranate · 22/01/2022 16:14

Try someone else.

A lot of cleaners aren’t great, and this is a short booking so may not be a huge priority for the agency. 1.5 hours sounds about right.

RosieRoww · 22/01/2022 16:31

I would be very specific about the tasks you want to be done.
Also 1.5 hour is not much- can you extend to 2 hours?
Perhaps is the lack of time?

RogerDodger · 22/01/2022 16:35

Definitely get a new cleaner. This is really shoddy work. Be very specific with new cleaner, walk round the house and show them everything you want moved and cleaned under and the nooks and crannies that have been neglected by previous cleaners.

SoItWas · 22/01/2022 16:45

It's hard to say, without knowing how messy your floors are, but 1 and a half hours doesn't sound like enough?

Can you do everything on your list, to the standard you expect, in that time?

SoItWas · 22/01/2022 16:47

Do you have pets? Dog/cat hair would make hoovering take a lot longer, as would a toddler mashing things in to carpet on occasion, flicking food from high chair everywhere etc?

charliebear78 · 22/01/2022 16:55

I am a SE cleaner and think that you would be better off with someone like me, than with an agency.
A SE cleaner should take pride in their work, and can work well knowing what need doing on a weekly basis.
Be clear what you want them to do.
I think 2 hrs is a better timeframe

sqirrelfriends · 22/01/2022 17:11

We used a few agencies and they weren't great. Also used some self- employed cleaners and they were largely better except for the one who was unreliable and stole.

I think with the agencies, they are more likely to just get paid NMW minus travel time so are more prone to leave early to get to the next appointment. They also don't have their own business/reputation on the line.

TracyMosby · 22/01/2022 17:19

Have you timed yourself doing it yourself? To see if what you want is possible in the time?

Leaving early and not doing the job is inexcusable.

caringcarer · 22/01/2022 17:20

Mops with buckets are awful and very wet. Get as steam mop, much better and quicker as no wringing put mop, or not.

I use an independent self employed cleaner who does a great job when she is there but go or various excuses/reasons has missed 4/11, supposed to do 1 1/2 hours a time twice a week but most weeks I only seem to get her once or else she offers a 2 hour clean but that does not for me as I want kitchen cleaning twice each week. I am on lookout for someone more reliable.

I think ditch the cleaners and buy one of these or 2. I have hard floors and this is a game changer. Cleans under all the furniture and to be honest you don’t need to mop every week 🤭 as you get your floor swept really well every day. I don’t use the mopping function on mine as I felt it was poor.

Or even get one and reduce the cleaners to fortnightly?

Malibuismysecrethome · 22/01/2022 17:33

I think it would take 4 hours to do a thorough job of cleaning all the floors and spaces.

Darbs76 · 22/01/2022 17:34

That’s more a deep clean under sofa’s etc, most cleaners do more a surface clean

RogerDodger · 22/01/2022 17:42

OP said she wanted a deep clean.
NumberTheory · 22/01/2022 18:19

I think you need different cleaners. You’ve been clear with this company but they obviously aren’t set up to provide the service you want. But I also agree with others that you should expect to pay more for it - either a fair bit more time or if you find an great cleaner who can do it in less time, a significantly higher rate.

I wouldn’t really expect that sort of detail from or care from someone who can only command minimum wage, which seems to be what most agency cleaners are on, especially not at a good pace.

I think PP’s suggestion of getting in several cleaners for trials and seeing who gets what you’re asking for is a good idea. Put some effort into finding the right person, then hold to them!

Katyppp · 24/01/2022 13:04

And today, they are supposed to be here at 10am and it's now 1pm and there's no sign of them and no communication from agency 🙄

Mine does this and cancels last minute too I’m going to change
