Parcel for neighbours but they’re in!

Delivery guy just knocked with a parcel for the upstairs flat, after knocking their door and getting no answer. I thought they were out but DH whose work area is below their living room said he heard them react to the knock! They clearly just decided not to bother answering. They always leave it days before they collect parcels too. AIBU to think if you’re at home watching telly you can answer the bloody door?!

You had a 10pm chat with them yesterday?

Perhaps they enjoy chatting with you and use this as an excuse?

Toanewstart22 · 21/01/2022 12:42

10 minute

@MinesaBottle

Serendipity79 one of them is in the entertainment industry and isn’t working atm. Although of course he could be out/in the shower/on the loo etc! This has happened a few times and for some reason just hit me the wrong way today. We get on very well and they take in parcels for us too so I’m whinging on here rather than to them Grin
Wait

You get on “very well” with them
And
They take on parcels for you

What the heck is the problem?!

DixonD · 21/01/2022 12:43

Took me two weeks to get a neighbour to answer the door to take their parcel. They were in every time I tried as I went round when they got home.

YANBU.

MinesaBottle · 21/01/2022 12:43

Howshouldibehave As in one of them getting up and then walking a few steps then stopping and that was it. Maybe they were on a work call and signaling to the guy from the window to bring to us. Who knows. We will in any case have the parcel for days now.

Victorian maisonettes - you can hear quite a lot!

The problem is, apart from my being in a bad mood, that I wonder if they’d take a parcel for us if they knew we were in? Just find it a bit odd is all although agree there are many reasons they might not have been able to answer to door at that moment

RedCandyApple · 21/01/2022 12:46

You obviously get on with them very well I wouldn’t stop and talk to any of my neighbours for 10 mins so what’s the issue with taking in their parcel?

Viviennemary · 21/01/2022 12:47

If you are in the house answer thd door. End of. Cfs.

Wnkingawalrus · 21/01/2022 12:48

I wouldn’t assume they couldn’t be bothered to answer the door. Maybe they were on work calls?

We often find delivery drivers knock and don’t use the doorbell so we sometimes don’t hear them.

2022success · 21/01/2022 12:49

If I am working I often cannot leave and answer the door. There are all kinds of reasons they haven't answered. I don't know why it's a big deal.

If you don't want to take in their parcels then don't. It sounds like they take ages to collect so I wouldn't bother probably.

If you're in the shower? Asleep? Working?
Chely · 21/01/2022 12:50

We had a neighbour like this for years, she always went for a nap when the postman came. I took pacels in most of the time but she would wait for me to bring them to her. I stopped taking them in then dh answered the door and took one in, I kicked off at him because they'd gone abroad so we had the damn thing for 5 weeks!!!

MinesaBottle · 21/01/2022 12:54

I’m not going to stop taking their parcels in, I’d rather keep them for days than have them left outside to get nicked tbh! Am just in a bad mood today and I know I’m being a bit U haha! As long as they don’t expect us to be in whenever they decide they’re ready to collect it!

I also don’t get the not bothering to collect the parcel thing, I always end up messaging them or taking it to them. If I’m expecting a parcel I’m checking tracking! If delivered to a neighbour I go round as soon as I get home.
On average, I get a parcel daily. Yesterday I got 3. I’m definitely not checking tracking on each and every one, only if it’s noticeably late.

If the courier isn’t leaving a notice on their door, how are they supposed to know you have their parcel?

My neighbors only end up with my parcels by error. My setup allows contactless, decently secure delivery.

ElectraBlue · 21/01/2022 13:05

I decided not to accept any parcels for anyone a while back...

The two flats next to me are rented and one of them is home to a bunch of grumpy people who can never even bothered to say hi or smile when they pass you by in the corridors.

They seemed to be getting deliveries all the time and I was getting couriers ringing my door bell instead.

My blanket reply now is just 'sorry this is not for me and I don't wish to hold anybody else's packages'.

It would be different if it was long-term, decent neighbours but I don't see why I should do anything for these people...

The point is you do need to feel obliged to take this on.

ARabbitisaBunny · 21/01/2022 13:09

I stopped taking thing in for my neighbour for this reason. I had to speak to her about it when she started to put her name, but our address on deliverys. Apparently, it was easier to have it delivered to us as it saved her from having to answer the door if she didn't feel like it! She also felt that it was our responsibility to get the stuff to her at a time that suited her and was quite miffed when I told her I was no longer prepared to accept deliveries (there were other factors at play here, so not completely unreasonable on our part). I should add that the only time she deigned to take something in for us, she bloody opened it, 'to see if we'd bought anything interesting'!

UnsuitableHat · 21/01/2022 13:15

Annoying but up to them whether they answer the door. I’d probably refuse to take their parcels though.

My NDN is like this. He's a young, single guy and I have a young baby but he still doesn't come to get his parcel and waits for me to take it round! I've got one of his parcels at the moment and saw royal mail post the card to say where it was. Its been here well over a week but I'm refusing to take it over, he knows where it is and is perfectly capable of knocking on my door!
user5315 · 21/01/2022 13:19

Our NDN does this too OP and it drives me potty! I took a parcel in for them last week, delivery man told me he will put a note through the door and then within minutes of me closing the door I could clearly hear the couple and their brother stomping around inside so they were definitely in. Their doorbell is loud enough for me to hear it too so there is no way they didn't hear him knock! And obviously they ignored the note as it was still sitting in our porch 24 hours later until we knocked and gave it to them!

RincewindsHat · 21/01/2022 13:27

Maybe they thought it would be left outside the door, that's what usually happens if a delivery arrives for me and I'm not there.

I recently missed a parcel because I was upstairs delivering a lecture over Zoom. My students pay a hefty amount to attend university but I'm sure dropping everything to answer the door on their time is fine Hmm
