Searched the internet, used to be a thing, can’t find anywhere that does it now.

I thought Chinz was a pattern? How would one re- chinz curtains?

TatianaBis · 20/01/2022 22:00

Chintz is a patterned fabric but also refers to the glazed finish which you can restore with corn starch.

Would you be up for having a go yourself or would you prefer someone pro to do it? (Depends how fond you are of the curtains I guess?) as you can buy spray starch or fabric glaze - but I don’t know that I’d be brave enough to risk really nice curtains….

TatianaBis · 20/01/2022 22:17

I considered putting them in the bath of corn starch, but they’re massive and I don’t know how I’d dry them.

When we were kids my mum had a cleaner who was still working in her 70s and used to work at Claridges. She used to re-starch our curtains as she had done at Claridges. I know it’s possible but I don’t want to mess them up.

If there’s an independent dry cleaners/laundry service near you they might do it? The dry cleaners near where I used to work would starch shirts for you and I am pretty sure they’d have happily done curtains too.

Ah yes, good idea. Thanks.

Just sticking my head in to say ‘re-chintzed’ is an amazing word and I will be trying to find an opportunity to use it in conversation! Grin

TatianaBis · 21/01/2022 08:30

Good plan, I might re-chintz my life.

Could I re-chintz my husband, do you think? The gloss has definitely worn off.

OwlNoises101 · 21/01/2022 08:36

@Wellgothenidontcare 🤣🤣🤣

Farrandau · 21/01/2022 08:54

Thank you, OP, I had no idea chintz referred to the finish as well as the pattern, or the re-chintzing was possible. It’s nice to discover an entirely benign new fact.

You can buy spray on starch that you iron on. Would that work?

Possibly but he would be stiffer…

You can buy spray starch but I’d need loads of bottles and several days to iron the curtains. You have to iron as you spray.

I need several parts re-chintzing.
