Aibu to not expect HUGE spiders at this time of year 😩

Ok not spiders plural just the one big fucker but I am SHOOK. I have a very ridiculous but very real fear of spiders, so much so that about 5 years ago I went on the ‘friendly spider course’ to try and help me deal with it. The course was actually brilliant and has definitely helped but I think in my mind I only really expect to see the very big ones Aug/Sept/October. Those months I’m expecting to see them, so I can use my coping mechanisms from the course to deal with them.
I just walked into my sons bedroom and saw a movement and I’m not even exaggerating... I thought it was a mouse!! It was the biggest spider I’ve ever seen and it seemed to re set the fear because I screamed the bloody house down Blush
Can anyone reassure me it’s unusual for this time of year? I thought they’d all be dead by now. How do other scaredy cats cope? I’m all anxious like I haven’t been in years. Silly, I know.

Very unusual. Get some conkers. And thank God that you don't live in Australia (after hearing of DS's run in with a huntsman whilst he was driving last week!) Grin

I had two last week. I assume they think it’s spring because it’s been mild.

Oh thank you. It is unusual isn’t it? Especially the very big, thick ones. I’ve always embraced the colder weather for the very reason there’s less spiders Grin
Oh my God I would not cope in Australia!

Oh don’t I haven’t seen any for months now I’m scared 😟 I can’t stand it when it’s spider season I’m constantly on edge. Someone recommended to me indorrex flea treatment .. apparently it works on spiders too and fumigates the house ? I’m thinking of trying it.

UK spiders can live for up to 3 years

The really oldie ones are all living indoors

Get some peppermint oil and water in a spray bottle and spray windows and around the door frames. Makes them think twice about coming in!

They scuttle out looking to mate and that’s why you see them - they don’t generally live outdoors at all but in the fabric of the building the rest of the time (hence why things like conkers on window ledges don’t actually deter spiders.) Guessing the mild autumn has confused their body clocks.

It's the shock of seeing one when not expecting to that got me yesterday. Big bastard he was but I have never seen the big ones in winter.
