Tried to drive my (newish to me) car in boots with a small 1 inch heel today and constantly felt like I was going to stall the car!

I’ve been driving ages but I can’t see to drive in anything other than flat boots, converse or ballet flat!

Is it just me? What am I doing wrong? I don’t want to be going around revving like a boy racer cos I want to look less like a potato!

@housemaus

I keep an old pair of trainers in the car for this exact purpose! I can drive in most things now, but anything with a seperate heel won't work - I can do my platform trainers/chunky platform boots, so it's not the height, just the angle of my foot I think. Oh, and Ugg boots - I once tried to drive in those and did some accidental braking, terrifying.

I'm a pro at switching to my old trainers quick in the car now Grin

I can, but I don't. Mainly from a safety perspective, but also driving in heels would rub the back of them surely and ruin them? Flip flops are really dangerous to drive in as they can slip off and get stuck under the pedal.

RampantIvy · 20/01/2022 17:23

I can drive in any of the shoes/boots that I own and wear day to day because none of them have very high heels.

I wouldn't drive in my snow boots, wellies or flipflops though.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 20/01/2022 17:26

I don't drive in my snow boots (we drive round the Scottish Highlands over winter), so always swap into something else, but I am comfortable driving in all other footwear (and barefoot).

megletthesecond · 20/01/2022 17:30

No. Only trainers or secure ballet flats in summer, I keep a pair in the car.
Also barefoot if I've been to the beach.

WingingItEveryDay7 · 20/01/2022 17:30

I can't walk in heels of any kind so definitely couldn't drive in them 🤣 Other than that, I drive in anything, just takes me a few minutes to get to grips with how the pedals feel and I'm all good. Been driving nearly 20 years mind so have had plenty of practice!

AllKnowingGerbil · 20/01/2022 17:31

Have to have a reasonably flat shoe. I would drive in sandals or heels.

Also if a sole is too thick I cant feel the pedal properly.

Oh and I have walking boots where the grip snags on the pedals so I cant drive in them either!

Peanut82 · 20/01/2022 17:31

Never tried to drive in heels or flip flops so I don't know.
I have a pair of pumps and a pair of trainers that I prefer to wear when driving

Ffsmakeitstop · 20/01/2022 17:31

It's not illegal to drive in flip flops. I do it all the time. Don't wear heels these days but could drive in them better than I could walk.

AllKnowingGerbil · 20/01/2022 17:31

wouldn't - doh!

Freshprincess · 20/01/2022 17:35

Most shoes except flip flops. I feel like they get stuck.

I used to work with a woman who would take her shoes off and drive home barefoot. I’ve never tried it though.

HundredMilesAnHour · 20/01/2022 17:38

@Sartre

I don’t think it’s particularly safe to drive in sandals or heels personally, should be a full flat shoe or boot. A woman crashed into the back of DH once when her very high heel slipped off the brake pedal at a junction.

I can only drive in trainers.

I agree with this completely.

It's not a case of can you drive in high heels but rather, should you drive in high heels? Or flipflops? Of course you shouldn't.

This article covers it better than me:
www.themotoringlaw.uk/driving-in-heels/

For those who choose not to read the link, to summarise:

Rule 97 of the Highway Code states that before setting off on a journey, you should ensure that ‘clothing and footwear do not prevent you using the controls in the correct manner’

Should an individual become involved in an accident as a result of inappropriate footwear, they could be considered to be driving ‘without due care and attention’. While it is can be possible to defend allegations of driving without due care and attention, should it become apparent the defendant was wearing unsuitable footwear which may have played a part in the manner of their driving, it is likely to become far more difficult to defend the matter.

toppkatz · 20/01/2022 17:53

Hardest thing to drive in is riding boots if you ask me Grin

I usually wear flat shoes, but can drive in heels upto around 1" no problem.

traintraveller · 20/01/2022 18:02

I'm fine driving with heels of any height, it's the thickness of the sole that makes a difference in feel of the pedals. I can't drive in wellies or walking boots

Twolostsoulsswimminginafishbow · 20/01/2022 18:02

I can drive in anything, from thick wooden clogs to heals (usually local in heals though) and have three different cars (including an automatic Smart car and a big manual Volvo SUV.) I don’t think about it.

Coquohvan · 20/01/2022 18:04

From memory it’s illegal to drive in sliders or flip flops on Spain.

Newpuppymummy · 20/01/2022 18:05

I can drive in any shoes but can’t drive barefoot

RampantIvy · 20/01/2022 18:06

I have just googled. It isn't illegal to drive in flip flops or barefoot, but it isn't advised as you aren't properly in control of the car. If I had to jump on the brakes for an emergancy stop it would be pretty painful in bare feet.

Scarby9 · 20/01/2022 18:09

I never wear heels but I can drive (and have driven) in any of my footwear, including wellingtons, garden clogs and flip flops.

ThinWomansBrain · 20/01/2022 18:10

I can drive in any of me shoes, but pretty much only wear trainer types these days - none of my shoes have heels of more than an inch, maybe 1.5.
When I drove to work regularly, I did keep 'driving shoes' in the car - but primarily because I didn't think it did much good to lowish heeled court shoes; I think my favourites had suede covered heels.

DisappearingGirl · 20/01/2022 18:11

I did read that it isn't great to drive in flip flops (or flappy sandals I guess) due to the danger of the pedal getting wedged between the flip flop and your foot. If I remember correctly, this had caused a number of accidents.

Auntieobem · 20/01/2022 18:11

Can't drive in heels, but then can't walk in them either so hardly surprising.

I have absurdly little feet, so when I put my feet on the pedal my heels arent on the floor at all and strains my calves.

So I'm better in heels as they allow my foot to rest on the floor and still reach the pedal.

Spilltheteaplease · 20/01/2022 18:15

I don't wear heels but can pretty much drive in all my footwear. Obviously I don't drive in flip flops and boots with very thick soles are more difficult.

It depends on the car too. I had one where the pedals were really close together so anything chunky would be hard to drive in.
