Solicitor letter to my address for someone else

Had a letter turn up today from a solicitor chasing a debt. The letter is addressed to someone I don't know/never heard of/never lived here. The first line of the address is my address but the postcode is wrong.

I've phoned the company and told them and they said they will update the details, but tbh the man on the phone didn't seem that bothered, I asked if this person had given my address or if it was an error on their system but he said he couldn't tell me.

I've also googled the mans name as it has a usual spelling of the first name but can't find anything.

AIBU to be worried that someone is using my address for debt? Or is it likely just an error?

if the postcode is wrong I wouldnt worry about it, it isnt actually your address if its not 100%

I would also return to sender with the actual envelope

We once had someone - a bailiff and a policeman turn up at out address. The person they were looking for had given our address as his home. I told them that and they went away
You could just put a letter jn the post and/ or email to the bailiff agency to confirm your phone call.

I would check with the land registry for a any recent searches on your property (if you own it?) also check your credit file for any debt that's not yours. Radio 4 did a recent investigation into people taking peoples addresses to transfer debt across, and even transferring the leasehold of properties from under peoples' noses. Hopefully it's just an innocent mistake but you can never be too careful.

Just googled the postcode and it doesn't exist!

I will also return the letter as return to sender and send am email too, thanks all Smile

This is really good to know thank you. Do you know how to find out about searches? I know how to search but not to see if anyone else has searched!

Chances are they don't have a full current address for the person they are looking for and have just fired off a load of letters to similar addresses in the hope that one lands in the right place.

Even if someone is giving out your address on credit applications there is no comeback on you...you can't be held liable.

Debts are not registered against property (unless we’re literally talking about a mortgage being taking out not in your name against your property which I’d say is hugely unlikely considering you live there).

You’ve done all you can, there’s nothing to worry about.

Last person in my house had debt collectors, most was fine with a return to sender (probably checked the electoral roll and realised i was on it not the debtor), only one i phoned and it stopped then. Again, they werent bothered.
