Unexplained crack in mirrored dressing table

Hi all

A few months ago my Fiance bought me a lovely mirrored glass dressing table. I really love it, I've never owned anything so pretty before having been a single Mum for most of my adult life and not having much spare cash.

Fast forward to today, my Fiance has rang me to tell me that there is a four inch crack running from one corner of the dressing table inwards. I'm so upset, I've looked after it so well. I sat there this morning to put on my makeup for work and didn't notice any crack.

I know I haven't damaged it, I know I haven't knocked it or dropped anything on it, and my Fiance says he hasn't either.

My question to you is: Is it possible that the glass has just spontaneously cracked by itself?

Have any of you ever experienced anything similar?

I read online that extreme changes in temperature or direct sunlight can cause mirrored glass to crack, but I'm pretty sure my dressing table hasn't been subjected to either of those.

I know it's silly but I'm quite upset, and I feel like my Fiance probably thinks I know what's happened and I'm just not admitting to it.

Have any of you ever had mirrors or mirrored furniture just crack by itself?

The only thing I can think of is that the frame was too tight and has been gradually putting pressure on the glass until it cracked. As you are fond of it, you could have it repaired.

LubaLuca · 19/01/2022 21:44

It's probably stress on the glass caused by however it's fixed to the material behind, or a fault in the glass. I imagine you could get it repaired if you wanted to, maybe a picture framer would be a good place to start making enquiries.

I had a beautiful glass coffee table that cracked all by itself. I heard it happen from the next room. Glass was everywhere. Someone came to inspect it from the company I bought it from and I got a refund. They said it was caused by a tiny bubble in the glass. The guy inspected it with a magnifying glass,

We had similar with a glass shower surround. Came home one day and it was in a million little pieces on the floor. A plumber said glass sometimes just does this, especially in low temperatures, which ours had been in.

Thank you everyone. I've been so upset, I know it's silly but I've been in tears because I love it so much and feel like I'm somehow to blame for the damage (even though I know I'm not).

You've made me feel a lot better. I'll just have to try to get the glass repaired or replaced.

P.S. No more glass furniture for me!

Yes, it happened to me.
Luckily, it was in the spare room. We woke up to what we thought was fireworks🙈🙈.
Opening the door of the room to find glass everywhere and everything that was sitting on top of the chest of mirrored drawers was flung about the room. The glass was embedded into the carpet for months after. The worse part was that I had a cot in that room that my niece used for her 9month old baby when she stayed with us.
The furniture wasn't cheap and the shop I bought it from offered to replace it. I would NEVER have mirrored furniture again.

A shower screen shattered spontaneously. I called up the manufacturer and even though I didn't buy it he said it had a lifetime guarantee so they replaced it!

Dont think like that.
You clearly dont know why it's happened.
Why would he think otherwise?
(Unless he's a bit of a dick)

Choosingtochange · 19/01/2022 23:29

He's cracked it!

Medievalist · 19/01/2022 23:33

Have also had a shower screen spontaneously shatter. And a pane of glass in a window 🤷‍♀️

AcatcalledCat · 20/01/2022 00:55

Happened to me because I left my straighteners on it to cool down Blush. As soon as I stood up, the vibrations from the floor combined with the heat cracked it. Unfortunately, overtime it got worse

Flavabobble · 20/01/2022 01:47

I was once in a supermarket, near the cafe, when the glass display lid cover shattered. It was safety glass so all disintegrated into tiny pebbles. It was really loud and all the food needed discarding - there was noone touching it and no visible cause.

I've also had a glass side table shatter - just after I'd put a cup of tea on it.

^ this Happened to my mirrored furniture.

Yep had it happen to one of my patio windows.

Rawmum30 · 20/01/2022 02:12

A Pyrex clear glass jug spontaneously exploded on the kitchen worktop, luckily I had my back tuned to it, else I might have got glass in my face. I was finding slivers of glass for months after…. So scary.
Show your fiancé all these answers, but as one pp said, you have nothing to feel guilty over, but he has if he is making you feel so bad about the situation.

christingle2 · 20/01/2022 02:18

Could be heat from hair straighteners, in my experience it weakens the table enough that any light knock in the future can create cracks in the glass

JaffaCake70 · 20/01/2022 05:20

@christingle2 I don't use hair straighteners, but I'm wondering if the crack has been caused by me tending to put my cup off coffee on that side (on a coaster) of the dresser while I get ready. One lady here has said her's cracked when she put a hot cup on there, I'm now thinking that this is possibly what's happened to mine.

These furniture items should come with warnings about these things.
