To eat frozen sausages ten days past their something date

Actually I'm a vegetarian but wondering if I can dish them up to DD and dh.

The thread on whether fish csn be eaten a few weeks after it has been has got me a bit worried. On the packaging of the sausages it says freeze on day of purchase (which I did) and eat within one month.

They are currently defrosting in the fridge and I was planning to fry them tomorrow. I froze them on 9 Dec so if we have them tomorrow it would be 11 days after they were meant to be eaten. I kind of thought because they're frozen a week here or there doesn't matter but then I have very little knowledge of or experience with meat.

Yes you can definitely eat them if they've been frozen before or on use by date!

Rodion · 19/01/2022 20:55

So they've been frozen the whole time? They are totally fine. The worst that could happen is that they won't be as delicious as when they were fresher, but it doesn't seem long enough for that. I've eaten meat after a year in the freezer and it was no different to freshly frozen.

stripetop · 19/01/2022 20:56

I can honestly say I have never, ever paid attention to a date once something has been frozen. And I'm married to a farmer. If it has gone white, freezer burn, would give to dogs, we are talking years. If it smells bad, there was something wrong at point of freezing, chicken sometimes.

They will be absolutely fine.

WeeFae · 19/01/2022 20:56

I've eaten frozen sausages up to a year later.

Luredbyapomegranate · 19/01/2022 20:56

Yep fine. The month will be a best before, ie taste will start to decline very slightly after a month. They’ll be grand.

dementedpixie · 19/01/2022 20:56

They will be absolutely fine

MrsGinnyM · 19/01/2022 20:58

As with everything, just make sure that they are properly cooked through in the centre.

Ericaequites · 19/01/2022 20:58

As long as they have not been previously defrosted, they will be fine.

UthredofBattenberg · 19/01/2022 20:59

I pay no attention to the use withindate once frozen. As long as its frozen by the fresh use by date, I'd eat it.

I honestly wouldnt give sausages frozen on 9th December a second thought about eating

PlanetNormal · 19/01/2022 21:00

Our freezer died during the first lockdown. We had to eat a lot of defrosting food quickly to avoid waste so we ate pies, burgers, sausages etc which were three years past their use by date. Still alive.

Freecuthbert · 19/01/2022 21:02

Once something is in the freezer, I honestly don't check the dates. The sausages will be fine. I could have sausages lurking in my freezer for a year and I'd still eat them.

TooMuchPaper · 19/01/2022 21:04

We had 2 year old sausages last week. All lived to tell the tale. My husband's aunt used to fish (she had a lake) and freeze pike. Years later she would serve them up for dinner.

DistrictCommissioner · 19/01/2022 21:04

Gosh like previous posters it has never occurred to me to check once something is frozen. It’ll be fine.

AliveAndSleeping · 19/01/2022 21:08

Thanks everyone. I love Mumsnet. It's such a treasure trove of experience and information that can't be found anywhere else. Flowers

Is it ok to defrost them in the fridge for about 24h? Is there a way to know when they are done when I'm frying them? I mean without tasting them.

Put them on a normal plate and cut with a normal table knife, it should be really easy to cut through and hold its shape and be a consistent colour all the way through.

tillytoodles1 · 19/01/2022 21:16

I defrosted some sausages today in the microwave, cooked them and ate them, I never even thought to check the date on them

CMOTDibbler · 19/01/2022 21:21

I never pay attention to the 'eat within' dates either. Still alive despite 2 year old fish fingers etc

shedevill · 19/01/2022 21:45

Fine. Food does not implode on the stroke of midnight!
