Child stepped on baby's hand

Ds is 6 months and DD is 5 years old. While jumping around she accidentally stepped on his hand. I didn't see exactly what happened though so I'm not entirely sure if she really stepped on his hand and how much the impact was. He cried but not for very long. (He might have also cried because he was hungry and tired). He has now fed and is napping.

Aibu to think he's probably ok? His hand looks fine. Not bent or swollen. I think he was moving his fingers and hand Normally before he fell asleep but it's difficult to say with a 6 month old who can't grip very well yet anyway.

Do I have to go to A n E to get him checked out considering he seems fine? If anything was broken or sprained wouldn't he have cried a lot?

DD is quite light for her age. She weighs less than 15kg.

Just keep any eye on it. Babies are actually quite tough little things! Smile

GraciousPiglet · 19/01/2022 18:26

Assuming without shoes, definitely ok unless she actually jumped forcefully or from a height.

If with shoes, I'd keep an eye and if swollen or red tomorrow, call the GP or go to minor injuries it you think there are any issues.

I think if baby is settles and there are no visible signs of injury, it's likely to be fine!

rubyslippers · 19/01/2022 18:27

I wouldn’t take to a&e
As you’ve said there’s no swelling or bruising or anything to be concerned about
Keep an eye and if you’re worried call 111 - doesn’t need a trip to hospital

picklemewalnuts · 19/01/2022 18:27

They have nice squishy hands. Not all bony and breakable like mine.

AliveAndSleeping · 19/01/2022 18:27

Phew. Thanks for the reassurance. She wasn't wearing shoes but I'm not sure how how much force was there. His hand isn't even red but I'll keep an eye on it. Uggh I really need to pay more attention.Blush

He’ll be fine, it wouldn’t even cross my mind to get him checked unless it was obviously injured or he was very distressed.

Alonelonelylonersbadidea · 19/01/2022 18:45

It's not your fault, don't worry.
Babies are actually quite squidgy including bones and don't even have the muscular tension that older people have. I'm sure they're fine. We've all been there

BigYellowHat · 19/01/2022 18:53

I broke my hand recently and it was agony. I’m a grown adult and I actually cried plus my finger was bent outwards and I couldn’t clench my fist at all. He would have been screaming in agony if it was broken but I would still keep an eye.

MummyGummy · 19/01/2022 18:59

Keep an eye on it, if they’re reluctant to use it get it checked out.

My DD broke her wrist when she was 16m (just from tripping over!), cried lots to begin with, but after a feed and nap seemed ok but wouldn’t put any weight on it so took her to A&E.

AnyFucker · 19/01/2022 19:03

The bones in small baby’s hands are barely calcified yet and very bendy. It is highly unlikely there is serious injury.

guardiansofthegalaxychocs · 19/01/2022 19:04

Yeah probably fine. A baby would be wailing continuously if anything was broken.

Byebyeboris · 19/01/2022 19:34

Babies and children don’t necessarily wail continuously when they have a broken bone. My son broke his forearm falling as a very young child. He didn’t cry at all. I only took him to get checked out to be on the safe side. Turned out it was broken.

Jazzyjeffery · 19/01/2022 19:37

Keep an eye on it. My son tripped and broke his little finger when he was about 4. It swelled and went purple/red almost immediately. I took him to a&e and they x rayed and confirmed the break. However, they said there is no treatment for a broken finger really, it'll just heal on its own (well in his case anyway). But in my experience a break will bruise quite obviously.

I was just about to say the same. Babies are pretty rubbery, which is sometimes just as well.

This really isn't a valid blanket statement. My son broke his collar bone, clean snap in half and didn't cry or complain once. I only took him as I saw how he landed and he was a bit quiet and not using his arm properly
mugoftea456 · 19/01/2022 19:48

Don't beat yourself up! These things happen

Babies are incredibly squishy at that age !

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 19/01/2022 20:03

Generally little kids are fine with this sort of thing tbh!

Good to know what to look out for. Hope your son wasn't in too much agony.

Oh no. I'll keep that in mind too.

Squidgy baby 🥰

Mynameisnew · 19/01/2022 20:40

My son had an xray on his hand at about 10 months. Google baby hand xray. There's barely any bone to break and it just smooshes out of the way.

AliveAndSleeping · 19/01/2022 20:41

Thanks so much everyone. I think he's fine. He can grip my finger by bending all his fingers and generally seems his usual happy self. It's just one of these things where you think everything should be fine but then wonder what if it isn't and if you aren't being naive or careless to just assume everything is fine. Thanks for your help. Smile

Don't worry, @AliveAndSleeping!
It's perfectly natural to worry when you have such a tiny person to look after.
You'll know when something is seriously wrong, so trust your instinct and follow it if you feel something is off.
Have a good rest tonight - you're probably shattered from all of the worry. Thanks

BogRollBOGOF · 19/01/2022 20:49

DS had a paving slab fall on his foot when he was 2. Obviously very sore and swollen but no damage on the x-ray. His bone structure was still quite squishy compared to an older child.
It's pretty tricky for a young sibling to accidentally break a baby.
