So I have one month until I have to sit an assessment to prove I am capable to do my role (legal requirement). I have been with the company for over ten years, same department, similar role. I KNOW the stuff I'm going to be asked about (regulations, key issues, how I look after team, personal development etc) but I had a warm up practice with my manager today and I just blurted stuff out. Nothing I said was factually wrong but I couldn't articulate or elaborate on anything. I need to be able to speak confidently asap and be able to THINK when I'm speaking (I couldn't even remember what I'd said when it was over!) Please please help. What can I do? I've read everything I need to it just doesn't come out of my mouth like I know anything but bullet points

Keep practicing until you can talk fluently. Do you have a friend or family member you can talk to as if they were your manager? It will get easier the more you do it.

Also, are you allowed to have notes for the assessment? If you can take bullet points in you can focus on elaborating and explaining.

Thanks. I think because the questions are chosen from a selection (I can't see) I have focused on the subject as opposed to the likely scenario so perhaps writing down and talking through examples might help. I have the assessment over teams so I'm not sure about the notes, although perhaps I can subtly leave some on the desk 😅

Is it your manager that will do the assessment? Perhaps you could ask for their feedback and then set up another practice in a week or so.

No it's my senior manager (my managers manager ) that will do the assessment. They don't know me AT ALL (Big company)
