To ask if I should have broken wisdom tooth out?

Wisdom tooth has broken and NHS dentist says I should just have it removed.

I wondered if anybody has had wisdom tooth removed and it has caused problems?

I think extraction is probably what I will have to do but I am just reluctant as I have never had to have a tooth out before.

I am probably being very unreasonable to ask here but I just want some reassurance that it is okay to live without a wisdom tooth and I won't be eating soup the rest of my life!!

I have had 3 wisdom teeth out. No pain during or after.
Downside I am now not wise at all. Hoping the last one will 'kick in' with some wisdom!

Got both my bottom ones out. It had to be surgical due to them being partially erupted and growling at an angle. It wasn’t the nicest experience and I did get an infection but now it’s all healed over and I eat normally.

Yes.

It's only going to cause you grief if you don't.

I had all four of my wisdom teeth out at the same time under general anaesthetic. I was sipping tea an hour after surgery and eating mash and gravy later that day. Back to normal ish foods a week later. I had never had a tooth out previously and have had none removed since.

If it's cracked, it most definitely needs to come out. It will likely cause pain and sensitivity. It will also leave it open to infection. Repeated wisdom tooth infections were the reason I got mine out. It is horrible and my jaw used to seize up during an infection.

Best of luck!

Thank you everyone.

Definitely a consensus to whip it out and I am really pleased to hear your tales of successful extractions although it's a shame as I am not that wise now!

Thanks

Good luck, long it's definitely best to have it out. I had mine done as an emergency in hospital and the surgeon did it in a couple of minutes. It can be rough after that, but nothing unmanageable.

@ChardonnaysPetDragon a couple of minutes! That's amazing

He was brilliant.

Well, it might have been a bit longer, I was of my head on painkillers, but it didn't feel like a long time, IYSWIM.

I've had two removed.

First one under general anaesthetic at hospital.

Second one under local at a sort of super dentist.

I won't share the horror story of the 2nd one but the first was totally fine and I would recommend 100%.

I was like you, OP & wondered why I needed to have one wisdom tooth out, or any of the others, for that matter. I was non-committal whenever the dentist mentioned it & then that dentist left & it didn't seem to be an issue for the new one. I still have all 4 wisdom teeth and they don't cause me any bother. I do take care to brush them carefully and it's difficult to get that far back in my mouth to floss/clean between them & the molar, but other than that I'm happy they're there.

cheapskatemum · 19/01/2022 17:48

Ohh, just noticed yours is broken! Sorry, that's a bit different.

Thevoiceofreason2021 · 19/01/2022 17:49

Yes. I had all 4 wisdom teeth out, one of them had one infection after the other. I decided to get it out when the dentist pointed out that the antibiotics would stop working and the infection may spread to my brain. Infections and poor mouth hygiene are linked to heart problems and all sorts of nasties.

Watto1 · 19/01/2022 17:50

You will probably find that everyone you know has heard of or experienced horrific wisdom teeth removals! However, the vast majority (including mine) are absolutely fine. I was 22 when I had mine out. I was partying the night away two days later!

CA0932017 · 19/01/2022 17:55

I've had 2 out in my right side - at different times! Top right was so easy to get out at the dentist quickly. . Bottom right was partially erupted and had to come out at the hospital. It wasn't a nice removal but worth it as it was causing me nothing but problems and infections.

My left is still in. Top left has never moved or tried to push through gum and my bottom left is partially erupted but not an issue right now.

A broken tooth should always be checked out too. Dp went weeks with a broken tooth due to lockdown etc, not good!
