Hair appointment and baby

I'm meant to have a hair appointment of Saturday and I'm wondering whether I could ask if it's okay for my daughter to pop in to be breastfed? She's 12 weeks old and exclusively breastfeeding despite our best efforts to get her to take a bottle over the past few weeks she is still refusing. I'm meant to be getting my hair bleached so the appointment will be at least three hours. I have been going to the salon for a few years now. AIBU to ask if partner can pop in with baby so I can breastfeed her?

I don't see the problem, I've taken mine to appointments before. I was only having a cut though, only concern with longer appointments would be baby being around chemicals and possibly getting bored.
I went to a salon a while before I had kids, that had toys and children's books in a box for little ones to play with so they could play freely while their parents had their hair done, I thought that was a good idea!

FruitMelange · 19/01/2022 09:47

Mine doesn't allow babies because of the hazardous nature of fumes.

QuiltedHippo · 19/01/2022 09:53

Course! I don't see how people can see it as a relaxing place when there's hairdryers blasting all the time

@Bizawit I've had to do this twice now when DH got called into work unexpectedly, first time she was tiny and lay on my chest, second time much more active and a pain trying to pull my mask off. As your eyes are shut you can't do much! It was up narrow stairs so couldn't bring a pram, that might be easier.

namechangedtotellyou · 19/01/2022 09:59

I'm not sure.

I get that hair dye appointments can be really long, but they also involve more proximity to chemicals, so I'm not sure a tiny baby would pass the risk assessment!

Aria2015 · 19/01/2022 10:04

Tbh I wouldn't even ask, I'd just do it! Doubt they'll turn them away! My lo is a bottle refuser too and it was trickier when she was younger and needed regular feeds to be away for any length of time. It does get easier when they fall into a regular feeding pattern and then easier still when they start food and so can have a food snack to tide them over if you're not around.

myyellowcar · 19/01/2022 10:07

Just ask or just do it, my hairdresser actively told me when I was pregnant that people do this all the time and it was absolutely fine for me to bring him even for the whole appointment

ThanksIGotItInMorrisons · 19/01/2022 10:21

No. All those fumes for the baby. Express and use a bottle. If she won’t take it she can wait. Babies won’t starve themselves deliberately.

yummychoccy · 19/01/2022 10:22

Of course you can.

Bigoldhag · 19/01/2022 10:45

Former hairdresser, this would be fine but I would probably ask you to wait until the colour was processing so that there was no risk of lightener/tint landing on the baby.

DappledThings · 19/01/2022 10:50

I had DC brought in to me when my haircut took ages longer than planned and he needed a feed. Didn't occur to me to ask. Never had it coloured so I don't know if that makes a difference, do you have to sit stiller or tipped back or anything?

shouldistop · 19/01/2022 10:52

My salon has a no children rule but luckily my hair only takes 90 minutes so in the early days I just fed right before the appointment.
I'd just ask.

Scrunchies · 19/01/2022 10:54

This thread really surprises me. I have a toddler now, but did breastfeed til 14 months, regardless I wouldn’t have dreamed of even considering taking my baby with me. I just went without a hair cut?!

Anotherviewtoyou · 19/01/2022 10:58

@Scrunchies I’ve never seen a child or baby in my salon either so it would never have occurred to me to bring a baby. Maybe it depends on where you go - small local salons might not mind. Mine is quite busy lots of young hairdressers - can just imagine the looks if a client handed them a baby to mind during their appointment!

MabelsApron · 19/01/2022 11:02

There's only one local hairdresser where I am and they're so good at what they do, but the manager's policy is very liberal about babies and toddlers being there. It often resembles a zoo rather than a relaxing experience. I try not to complain as clearly it drives the staff bonkers as well having toddlers underfoot and babies crying, but a couple of times I've been unable to hear anything my hairdresser says over the racket so I've had to say something. I've also seen hairdressers having to try and 'pass the parcel' a baby around rather than attend to their actual duties, which I think is pretty off. I really wish the parents wouldn't do it but they're allowed to, so what can you do.

LakeShoreD · 19/01/2022 11:13

How would it work if baby came in for a feed? I wouldn’t want to feed with dye on my head because of the fumes and you couldn’t do it with the hair dryer blasting in baby’s direction either. But as long as you didn’t disturb others or cause the stylist to run late then I don’t think anyone would mind.

tvcc · 19/01/2022 11:15

@RosesAndHellebores

I've had tri-colour highlights for years. Takes my hairdresser 90 minutes.
Well done?
HoppingPavlova · 19/01/2022 11:16

We used to all get our hair done at the same time but the last time my toddler ran riot and then the baby started crying at the same time and I felt so bad for all the ladies who have probably come in to escape their little darlings that from now on I have decreed that DH and the kids go together and I go on my own

I had this nightmare once. DH and I worked opposite shifts/days for several years so one of us was with the kids, no family around so going out to lengthily hair appt was off the cards. If DH had of been free to have them I would have either been working or sleeping due to shifts. So I hadn’t had my hair done in over 4 years, just scrapped it back in a ponytail each day, grey as and occasionally chucked a supermarket home dye in it. You can imagine the state of it.

The stars aligned and I finally was able to have my hair appt after several years. Went in and 45min later, while I had foils in my hair, a woman comes in with 3 young kids who cause chaos, kept banging my chair, running around seats playing hide/seek treading on peoples feet etc. I said they just needed to remove the physical foils and I was out of there, would wash bleach off at home and toss supermarket dye on. They tried to smooth it over (??) so I just went to counter with foils in, say they had one chance to quickly take my money and even then I thought that was a cheeky fucker act and I just left. I had waited years for just a few hours of peace and quiet to have my hair done. Complete arsehole mother and they had the hide to ask me if I wanted another appointment, like it was an actual possibilityConfused.

Anotherviewtoyou · 19/01/2022 11:17

@HoppingPavlova poor you! Sounds like a nightmare.

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 19/01/2022 11:29

Mine doesn't allow children unless they are the one getting the haircut. Because of the heated tools and bleach fumes etc.

confuseddotcom1234 · 19/01/2022 12:00

I would check the only issue is in current times with covid restrictions they be less willing to have a baby present. Found this with a nail appointment.

Fair enough, my hair is bleached blonde and my roots are a couple of inches long now and looks a mess so just thought I'd get it sorted and make myself feel a bit better! Smile

I go to a salon with a no under 10s rule

If I was you I’d check

You shouldn't even be thinking about your hair, you're a mother don't you know Grin

Ah thanks for the reply. Eek yeh I think it would be tricky to hold her, so was thinking I could take her asleep in the pram. Of course then there’s always the risk she wakes up, so probs a no go..
