AIBU to keep turning the heating down?

I live in a shared student house. Heating is not working in one of my hosuemates room despite LL coming round to check and he said everything was fine. The room is cold. Radiator in said room is not as warm as it was before Christmas.

To 'solve' this issue said housemate keeps wacking the bloody heating up to THIRTY Angry because apparently this is the only way the room heats. The numbers on the combi boilet read 80. My Dad's a plumber and said the boilet should be on around 60 and the dial on the wall for the heating should be around 20. Today housemate with cold room posted a ranty message in group chat saying to stop whoever it was (ie me but they dont know that).

I have a cold interolence and sensory processing issues but even for me its like a bloody sauna and I think the heat is giving me migraines - radiators are either on/off no in between :/

I grew up on economy 7 and lived mostly without heating for several years (before my dad got his plumbing qualification).

AIBU to keep turning the heating down to 20 degrees? They refuse to get a heated blanket (we are allowed those) although they do use a hot water bottle.

Offer to swap rooms with them?

BooksAndGin · 18/01/2022 13:02

YANBU. I would turn it down to, 30 is way to hot and whose paying the gas bill? It'd be costing a fortune!

TimmyNook · 18/01/2022 13:03

I think you're a bit unreasonable not to have a civil conversation with them about it.

Perhaps if you are happy to be cold you could offer to swap rooms with them? This is surely a more sensible suggestion than being so cloak and dagger about turning it down.

neverendingwashing · 18/01/2022 13:04

As someone who can't bare the cold YABU! Swap rooms with her or keep your window open. My OH is always turning the heating down and it winds me up terribly.

AllotmentTime · 18/01/2022 13:04

Why are you arguing over the thermostat instead of getting the landlord to fix the heating properly?

Bloodyheating · 18/01/2022 13:04

Sorry forgot to mention their room is the biggest room in the house so I don't think they'd be very happy giving it up

Still might be worth asking, I would definitely swap for a smaller room if it was lovely and warm.

GoodnightGrandma · 18/01/2022 13:08

Have they bled their radiator ?

RebeccaManderley · 18/01/2022 13:09

Why don't they buy a plug in electric heater for their room or ask the landlord to buy one?

Rmka · 18/01/2022 13:09

YABU. Talk and resolve it like adults. The landlord has to fix it or provide alternative heating source for that room. And no, heated blanket is not a solution.

BashStreetKid · 18/01/2022 13:10

(a) Get back to the landlord jointly to push him to fix this.
(b) Borrow/buy an electric heater that housemate can use in her room.

Landof · 18/01/2022 13:11

It's very cold at the moment where I am and with people working from home more at desks, they get cold quicker. It's not great that their radiator doesn't work and I think that the landlord needs to find a solution for that.
It must be costing a fortune though!

reesewithoutaspoon · 18/01/2022 13:12

At 30 your bill is going to be massive. Try bleeding the radiator first. Its easy to do . You tube have video tutorials on it. It's often the cause of cold radiators especially if all the others seem to be ok

Bloodyheating · 18/01/2022 13:13

@GoodnightGrandma

Have they bled their radiator ?
Last term my radiator had a leak the day before I went home for xmas so the LL came round to fix that and said he needed to bleed all the radiators in the house as well

YABU. Being cold in your home is awful. It's not her fault the landlord is seemingly shit. Resolve it like adults.

OfstedOffred · 18/01/2022 13:16

They should just
A) bleed rad
B) get a basic plug in oil rad as temporary fix
C) get landlord to fix if A does not work

The ironic bit is the bill hasn't changed, there's 5 of us and the bill for water, energy, and internet has been a fixed price ever since we moved in despite the 30 degrees heating :/

LL bled all the radiators in the house before I went home for Christmas last term as mine developed a leak

I can't bare the cold either. Makes my lips turn blue and my fingers stop working. But even I draw a line at 30. In fact, as I'm off work ill today, I have heated one room to 18, have 5 layers on and a blanket. It's working. I'll put the whole house back on when everyone else comes home.

fruitbrewhaha · 18/01/2022 13:17

Have you tried bleeding the radiator?

It's very simple and likely to be the answer. Or it's the valves. It will be costing a fortune to heat the house, energy prices have rocketed

SleepingStandingUp · 18/01/2022 13:17

Offer to swap rooms

merryhouse · 18/01/2022 13:18

I was in a shared-house room that was registering 12 degrees once.

Boyfriend came to stay, felt the radiator, said "it needs bleeding" and fixed it in thirty seconds.

Blush

I'd spent years watching my dad bleed radiators, too...

Lancssss · 18/01/2022 13:22

30° is absolutely ridiculous, it would make me feel really ill! The landlord needs to sort the cold radiator out and as others have said in the meantime provide a heater for that room. I’d point out the gas bill will be rocketing, that might persuade them to sort it.

saleorbouy · 18/01/2022 13:24

Possible fixes.

Check to see if in/outlet radiator pipes are warm. Bleed any air off the radiator until the temp at the bottom of the radiator matches the top.
After bleeding the radiator top up the water so the system pressure is in green zone on pressure gauge. (Usually over 1bar) Google make model of boiler if top up water valve is not obvious. Usually small black handle on stainless braided hose connection.

Is the cold room higher in the house? The system might need to be balanced so that flow is equal to each radiator, the water will circulate on the easiest route.

To do this you will need to set all the radiator thermostatic vales (TRV) to max and open all the white valves on the other side of the radiator. Then on the hottest radiators turn in the other white valve (about 1 turn at a time) until the temp rises in the cold radiator. Keep going round making fine adjustments until the temps are evenly matched. (There are plenty of YouTube clips explaining this in more detail)
Reset the TRV's to individual desired settings.

Note covering radiators with clothes/towels etc will reduce their heating convection effect massively.

saleorbouy · 18/01/2022 13:28

If the system is leaking you will need to bleed the system regularly.
Naturally the air will end up at the highest point in the system but may take a while to get there.
