To apply for this job being a FT student?

Keep thinking I can’t lose anything by asking?

I’m a FT uni student, currently have about two hours of (online) lectures a day and two hours face to face on a Thursday . A week’s placement in May . No other commitments uni wise . Uni don’t seem to have plans to move to face to face teaching yet .

There’s a job come up not too far away from me (10 miles or so) - it’s entirely online just now - support worker for children and young people. Might move to traditional f2f delivery eventually but for now it’s entirely from home . They’re saying 8 hours a day plus occasional weekends and nights . I don’t know how flexible that hours are, ie if I can fit them around lecture times .

I’ve checked the job description, person spec and I match everything they’ve asked for; they’ve said a car driver desirable and I can’t drive but have good access to public transport as needed .

Would you apply anyway? I can commit to total full time hours end of March (barring the one week of placement) and I’ve got the experience and skills needed (ie the thing they’re supporting with, I’ve been there done that so can truly empathise/understand) .

I’m thinking if I apply and get turned down I’ve not lost anything have I?

If you don't ask....

Seriously though, if you meet 60% of the criteria it's always worth throwing your hat in the ring.

If it gets you in front of the right people, you can then look at whether it meets YOUR needs as much as theirs. Don't forget it's a 2 way process.

Often for the right candidate organisations are more flexible, especially if they have met you and decided you are a good fit. Whereas a general enquiry as to adjustments beforehand will get an automatic no, as they are still looking for the perfect candidate.

Go for it! Especially as by time they have finished recruitment, sent out offers/references etc it could be mid February so it's a minor adjustment for a relatively short amount of time.

I wouldn’t tell them you’re a full time student I think you could say ‘I’m currently studying for a degree and so would not be available during X times (when you have lectures) and have a week of leave booked in May.’
