… to not want my kitchen bin to smell bad?

I know how to prevent this from happening but my husband thinks I’m being over the top.

According to him “Kitchen bins smell bad” so I need not worry about it and he doesn’t like my suggestions to prevent the smell because he thinks it’s unnecessary effort.

Suggestions such as: change the bin liner if it smells even if it is not quite full to the top, give the bin a wash with spray and water if you find muck has managed to get out of the liner and onto the actual plastic bin.

Am I being unreasonable to want us to do things in order to prevent a bad smelling bin?

Well then it’s not about not wanting the bin to smell, it’s about the fact he doesn’t respect the family home enough to care whether he makes work for you by making the bin area messy. He doesn’t care that it’s work for you, he’s carrying on as he pleases.

I just give mine a quick wipe down with zoflora every week or so and it doesn’t smell

No, it’s not like that. He cares a lot about the family home, does a lot of household chores, errands, and mental load. I think it is mainly that he doesn’t smell it and my nose is more sensitive to it.

I spoke about fairness in an earlier post so I can see why you may have misunderstood but I think you’ve extrapolated from what I’ve written and landed somewhere quite far off the mark.

Really, what I was curious to find out is: do other people take steps to prevent bin odours and I think generally the answer seems to be yes.

Thanks everyone.

We have a separate food caddy and empty it every day otherwise it's bound to smell and in warmer weather you get flies. So a caddy with a lid emptied daily.

I wouldn't have food waste kept in a built in cupboard. We use a caddy, which is small and decanted into a larger outdoors container once it's full, and then cleaned. It certainly gets cleared out immediately if it does start to smell, and nothing very smelly goes into it in the first place. That would go straight into the outdoor bin.
