I seem to be in a minority but I love practical gifts! Would have loved a Dyson hand-held vacuum cleaner-thing for Xmas this year but ended up with an Armani watch ...sigh.

Recently asked for a steam generator iron for my birthday but was told that there was no way DH would be giving me an iron as a present. Ended up buying the steam generator iron anyway and got straightening irons instead (an iron of sorts and highly practical so just as happy - looking for Sad-do smiley face!)) .

Sorry to highjack, anyway YANBU, as it sounds as if he really wanted it for himself. Maybe next you can add your own list of things when the Kids are writing to Santa.

I thought it was bad enough a couple of years ago that the dc (3y and 1y at the time) bought me a recipe book. dh had gone on and on about the lovely present they were giving me and how it had been carefully chosen and he had spent ages looking for the right one. i opened it and thought "oh", literally. then dd1 said "its for you to cook daddy's dinner", which made it feel extra special!
I have used it a fair few times, and it's a nice book so I shouldn't complain, but I honestly was expecting something exciting!

I remember my mum saying she did NOT want to get gifts for the home as her Christmas presents. How right she was.

If it makes you feel any better, I got (amongst other things) a lidded basket for my POTATOES! Now it is true I have been wanting a decent one for a while but not, repeat NOT as a Christmas present.
