Bit grim - husband mucus coughing in the morn

Hi all some advice please! As soon as my husband wakes up in the morn, he coughs and starts clearing his throat. This then continues as he gets ready for work 4.30/5am starts. It goes on and on over and over and usually it's like white noise as we've been together 10+ years but recently I find myself getting so bloody angry with the repetitive barking/throat clearing! He suffers a bit with allergies (mostly dust) and I do my best to keep that to a min, he often gags when he is brushing his teeth as well. He has always been like it since I have known him. The coughing/throat clearing continues at a lesser degree throughout the day. He's a non-smoker in mid 40s, relatively healthy but snores like a trouper! He broke his nose when v young could this have any bearing? Anyone else experience this with their partners? Any pearls of wisdom to share so I don't go insane??? Shock

My DD is like this - it is allergy related. She sprays beconase (from the doc) up her nose each evening.

BooksAndGin · 18/01/2022 08:49

My DH is the same, we have a air purefire thing I can't spell Grin it helps! Also keeping the windows open.

Wat2do222 · 18/01/2022 08:53

Ooh thank you for the suggestions I will have a look for both in a bit to see if they help! I do feel sorry for him but sometimes I'm like for gooodness sake Blush

My husband does this . Non smoker. No vital symptoms. No hay fever.
It is much much worse when he has a cold + he does it more and brings up small amount blood and panics he has cancer- he doesn’t - he just burst a small blood vessel.
I feel your pain.
Men are strange strange beings,

GrinKnow the feeling OP, when my DH is having a bad day/night I usually buggar off to bed early as it's annoying.
Funny you say about the broken nose though DH broke his years ago and then suddenly had this problem could well be related.

Purpleraspberry · 18/01/2022 10:30

Are you me OP? I could have written this post word for word, apart from the broken nose part, however DH has been told he has unusually narrow nasal passages.

He wet coughs and clears his throat literally all the time, but mainly in the mornings. It is so irritating to be around. He has hay fever too and then I also have to listen to constant wet sniffing too Confused. Though thankfully he has tablets which help with that. Don't even get me started about when he has a cold!

I am afraid I have no answers or advice, I just wanted to offer empathy. I will be following this thread for any suggestions! Smile

Wat2do222 · 18/01/2022 16:38

@Purpleraspberry hahaha it seems there are a few of us! Sometimes I think that maybe it has become like a habit, I feel like if I coughed as many times a day my throat would be raw. Sometimes I will be an arse and say 'ARE YOU ALRIGHT?' in a shitty voice as it winds me up a bit Blush

I have a milder version of this some mornings. It is because I am lactose intolerant but often ignore that fact in favour of chocolate or cheese...

Zero123 · 18/01/2022 20:20

My husband used to do this until he stopped using aerosol deodorant and switched to roll on!

TheSpottedZebra · 18/01/2022 20:26

Oh god, I'm the cougher here Sad

I've literally never smoked, but I do have the cough of a 60yo, 60 a dayer. It's where grot has been dripping down my throat over night. It's grim. Sometimes very grim. Much worse when i have a cold. Allergies for me too, but I also have wrecked sinuses and oddly I've also broken my nose!

LoveFall · 18/01/2022 20:26

Try not to let it wind you up OP. It is better out than in.

I cough like that sometimes because I have asthma and my airways get irritated. A proper air cleaner in our bedroom helps.

Odoreida · 18/01/2022 20:28

My husband had a similar cough for ages, he was investigated for lung cancer but it turned out to be late-onset asthma. So much better with an inhaler

Wat2do222 · 18/01/2022 20:55

Thanks all, to the coughers I am sorry! I know that it must be awful and something must be triggering it. I have just read about neti pots for sinus clearing but I think with his gag reflex this might be a step to far! As I say most of the time I it goes unnoticed but the last few days its been getting on my last nerve!

OP posts:
TheSpottedZebra · 18/01/2022 21:02

Oh I (a cougher who has confessed above) use a neti pot when my sinuses are really bad! Very effective for getting loads of grot out. Specifically I use the neilmed squeezy bottle.
But I don't use it every day and even if I did, I don't think it would help the overnight grot build up.

Doing something repetitive can be a tick. X
