Am I being Unreasonable to think that I would have noticed if my 13 year old daughter has curly hair?

Frankly it's straight! Very very long but definitely straight.

She has been told by a friend and the latest SM that yes its probably curly!! It's NOT!!!
However she is trying to convince me to purchase expensive curl revivor products!!

Kids I ask ya!!!!

Depends. I thought mine was just straight and frizzy.
Nope. It’s wavy and some places ringlets. Didn’t know until I tried the curly girl method. It needn’t be expensive. Silicone free shampoo and conditioner ( I use 90p Alberto balsam) and some gel is all she needs to try it.

Some of us do find that we have natural waves if we cut our hair. What's the texture like? That's usually a big clue. I have naturally kinky hair and it's rough, which generally curls and waves is.
If it's that slippy slidy beautiful soft straight hair there's no chance it's curly.
If it's got a bit of texture she might be onto something.
However, the good news is curly hair works best with minimal/natural products. No expensive products just co washing with a non silicone/alcohol conditioner and squish to condish.
Anything else is just marketing.

I always had long straight hair, cut my hair a lot shorter and it went wavy for the first time. I then tried the curly girl method and now I have really curly hair!

I agree with the PP above - she doesn't need expensive products!

Oh my god I have an ex friend with poker straight hair but insisted to everyone she has mega curly hair. She didn't have a single wave, frizz or curl but was adamant her hair was curly. Me on the other hand have extremely long very curly ringlets. Curl creams can be as cheap as £1.

mafted · 17/01/2022 16:55

I didn't realise my hair was curly until my mid twenties, it was poker straight until I turned about 13 after then I just thought it was frizzy and unruly.
My parents definitely didn't despite my Dad and his siblings all having curly hair and encouraged me to brush it and embrace the 'natural bounce' aka the hideous frizz.

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 17/01/2022 16:58

@mafted that's brought back so many memories of frizzy hair and my parents telling me I need to brush it! I hated my hair so much

Same here! I used to iron my hair to smooth it. My parents were former hippies and would be telling me to 'stay natural maaan' Hmm it didn't help that every hairdresser I visited used thinning scissors with gusto which only made matters worse!

fourandnomore · 17/01/2022 17:58

Mine has always been ‘straight’ but it’s actually always gone quite frizzy when damp etc, I was looking at curly girl method for my daughter and tried it myself. I’ve got naturally curl and actual ringlets in my hair now I don’t shampoo the oils out of it. Yabu, there are loads of cheap options - just give her the info to read and ask her to source cheap options on Google, loads of blogs etc about it.

Theflying19 · 17/01/2022 18:02

Is it naturally poker straight and would never stay wavy even after sleeping in plaits, or is it more on the frizzy end of 'straight' in which case it could be wavy if not curly? A right faff though the whole process, especially CGM. But if she's 13 and keen to try - start with something relatively inexpensive like eco gel - don't feel like you have to get swept along with the whole CGM religion.

ToykotoLosAngeles · 17/01/2022 18:25

If it's frizzy, it's not straight. So it depends.

BoobsOnTheMoon · 17/01/2022 18:27

Oh god my teenage daughter spent a year or so insisting her hair had a natural curl. It didn't. I just smiled and said oh yes and let her waste her own money on products for curly hair.

yorkshireteaspoonie · 17/01/2022 18:31

It's a TikTok trend that's probably why

MaybeHeIsMyCat · 17/01/2022 18:33

A lot of people's hair is wavy or curly and they don't know
Pic 1 is my hair that looks "difficult" or frizzy or like it needs straightening maybe
Pic 2 is also my hair because it's actually wavy

Just let her crack on, but she doesn't need to spend a fortune on it. Look at cheaper products. She'll give up if it doesn't work. Lots of people have success with the curly girl method, thinking they just had straight hair before but turns out they were looking after their hair the wrong way

What do you use on your hair? It looks amazing.
MaybeHeIsMyCat · 17/01/2022 18:50

@TotoAnnihiliation I vary it but usually
Bounce curl shampoo
Innersense conditioner
Innersense I create volume and I create lift
Treluxe gel

TimmyNook · 17/01/2022 19:02

Her hair may well be curly.

I think people have this misunderstanding that curly hair naturally and magically falls into immaculate ringlets like you see on Instagram. The reality for most curly hair is that it needs work to look decentfull stop curly.

If I left my hair to dry naturally without any products etc, it would be straight in sections, wavy in the odd bit and a few curls at the front. I can straighten it and yoi wouldn't know its curly. But if I wet it, slather it in gel, scrunch it and diffuse it, it goes to ringlets.

If you're not going to let her buy some products for her curly hair, at least have the decency to buy her some decent straighteners to save her from years of teenage hair from hell.

Thank you. I'll look at these.

DrManhattan · 17/01/2022 22:13
