To think neutering might calm down my dog?

I know people say it’s an old wives tale but could it help?? Massively reactive Rottweiler. I’ve tried everything!! She’s due in season in the next couple of months and her reactivity worse than ever. Could it be down to hormones?

Before anyone says it we are in regular training!

Interested to see how old she is? The vet advice is 100% true but usually only until after they have reached adolescence. So you young naughty dog gets locked into that behaviour but an older dog gets calmer. We waited for my Akita to calm down before getting him neutered and by the time he was old enough it was no longer necessary.

Our Rottweiler was the best dog on the planet and never had a bad attitude. I didn't think they could. Have you tried a good, balanced trainer?

@FooFighter99 we lost ours to the same. He was well over 2 when he was neutered so I don't think it's because of that. It's extremely common in the breed. Thanks

It's not going to stop all the aggression. Check out SouthEnd Dog Training. Only thing I've seen actually work with effort. Seen it turn around dogs first hand.

I would allow her to get to 18 months for bone density and then would spay. But don't look at it as a solution for reactivity and aggression. In males it's likely to have the opposite effect than desired.

It was heartbreaking @EricScrantona

He was 10 and a half and we'd had him from 6months old. I'd never owned a dog before and was actually a bit scared of him when we first got him, so I got him neutered. So now I blame myself for the cancer

We didn't see it (the cancer) coming at all, it was such a shock. And we also didn't get the chance to have him PTS peacefully. I came downstairs on the morning of the Friday as lockdown was starting on the Monday in March 2020, and found he'd died in the night. It was absolutely awful and something I don't think I'll ever get over Sad

Rottweilers are, in my opinion, the best breed - so good with kids, people and other dogs, as long as they're brought up right Smile

I sincerely hope OP manages to get her dogs behaviour sorted

Hormones have a huge impact on dogs behaviour. Hopefully this poster is useful in explaining that. Contact Tom Mitchell Behavet for more info.

Oh @FooFighter99 that truly is heartbreaking. I'm so sorry. Ours didn't get to 10. One day I came back from work and there was a massive lump on his leg that just appeared. I took him to the vets and she said you have two weeks max. I didn't know how to tell our daughter who grew up with him. She still cries now, almost 5 years on. He lasted 3 weeks and 6 days but the last day was awful while we waited for an appointment.

I wish we'd got another but he would have had some big boots to fill and it wouldn't have been fair on him.

Southend dog training are great. That guy gives great advice.

We had a rescue jack Russell years ago who was not spade-she got pyrometra shortly after we got her-I would never put a dog through that again-She nearly died
