To not put a cover on my baby at night?

Baby girl was born 3 weeks ago.. 6 weeks premature. But she's a tough cookie and really robust from the start. However she barely tips the scales at 3 weeks old at 5lbs, despite that she's super strong.

She hates blankets and kicks them off, she busts out of swaddled (even a friend whose an experienced nanny tried to swaddle her and she was out within 2 mins). We got a grobag snuggle bag which she liked up til a few nights ago. Now she screams if we put her in it. She likes to sleep with her hands next to her face during the day so think thats why it's bothering her.

She's still 2lbs too small for the ones that allow their arms free.

She sleeps perfectly happily with no cover on and we keep the house warm. Is it terrible not to give her a cover? Is there a reason for needing one

Surely if she’s warm enough it’s fine?

BrieAndChilli · 17/01/2022 00:12

Put her in a vest and a sleep suit so she has an extra layer on?

GrouchyKiwi · 17/01/2022 00:13

If she's warm enough then no, she doesn't need a cover. I assume she's in vest and babygro, or similar.

Eileen101 · 17/01/2022 00:14

Of course you are not being unreasonable. If she's not chilly, no need.

Pointlessuser · 17/01/2022 00:18

I know you can get sleepsuits that come in a 2.5 tog I believe that you can put on, but I’m not sure if there is an age or weight threshold that means it’s not suitable for newborns. But that might be worth looking into.

WorriedGiraffe · 17/01/2022 00:21

She doesn’t need a cover if the rooms the right temp and she’s dressed appropriately, but getting too cold can be dangerous as I’m sure you no (my baby was prem and this was drilled into me), so I’d get a room thermometer to be safe if you don’t have one. I don’t think the sleeping bags are appropriate at your babies weight, though I could well be wrong.

ladycarlotta · 17/01/2022 00:42

the advice I was given when mine was newborn was that she will soon let you know if she's too cold, it's too warm that's the danger.
If she seems comfortable then she probably is.
Congratulations on your amazing little girl, OP, and here's to many years of joy to come.

Secondnightblue · 17/01/2022 00:44

Fine if she’s warm enough. Would she have a sleeping bag, like this one?

ladycarlotta · 17/01/2022 00:44

*ooh although, I may be talking out of my arse considering she is prem if she can't regulate her temperature properly. Consider merino wool babygro/vests, they do help

one thing about these is that if baby's too small their head can get through the neck hole and they slip down... mine was a 6lb-er but I had to go for the more swaddly type bags for a while as she really was swimming in the shoulder snap sort.
Secondnightblue · 17/01/2022 00:48

Ah OK - I see the OPs baby is prem so might not be suitable.

I’m sure it’s not a problem if the house is warm and she’s wearing a vest and babygrow etc. looking back DS was probably ridiculously layered up but I was convinced he was cold for some reason!

Bells3032 · 17/01/2022 00:59

She seems to be able to regulate her temp OK so doesn't seem to be an issue. She doesn't seem to be cold.

The grobag we have is this one which is the only one suitable for 5lbs

I had premature twins who were smaller than your baby, and I didn't use blankets for them either. A nice warm house with no blanket is fine, providing you're certain that she definitely can regulate her temperature even at night when it's colder. And as PP have said, there's more dangers with overheating.

As my two got bigger, we progressed to grobags - they were amazing. We always used the arms-free ones too as DS was a thumb-sucker and would howl the place down if he couldn't get his thumb in his mouth.

Congrats on your early arrival ❤️

Smurf123 · 17/01/2022 01:27

We had the grosnug bag for ds it's from 5lbs and Up but has poppers on arms so they can be in or out - he was only 5lbs 2 and we always had his arms out.
Though if she doesn't like it I'd just get a warm fleecy sleep suit for night time and use it and a vest and providing your room isn't too cold she should be fine she will soon let you know if she's cold.

This is like the one I have

@smurf123 thanks for the link. We tried this on her last night. Actually fits far better than the tommee tippee one and she was so much better with her arms free!!
