To ask for your suggestions for solo holidays?

I try to go away on my own every year. I usually go camping in Scotland for a week or so but I’m looking to try something different this year.

I’m pretty independent - happy to go to hotels, restaurants etc on my own - but would be open to a group trip in the right circumstances. I like being outside so something relating to kayaking or climbing might be an option?? On the other hand, I also love indulgence - a nice hotel and spa would also be a possibility!

Any suggestions for places to go / companies to check out etc? Thank you Flowers

Ha! I came in here to say I'm planning a solo camping trip to Shetland and maybe try that, but sounds like it's not that different! I would love to do a canoeing river type trip, like one in the Ardeche or something, but when I've looked into them, it seems really hard to get one where you can book on as a solo person, as all the canoes seem to be for two people. If you do find a good solo canoe trip though, let me know!

MsJaneAusten · 16/01/2022 21:43

Oooh. Something like the Ardeche would have been perfect! I’m not a fan of a double kayak though; I like full control Grin

I went on a kayaking trip with South Skye Sea Kayak last year if that would be of interest to you though @ShinyMe

How old are you? (If you don’t mind me asking!). A friend in her mid-50s has been on some amazing sounding hiking/walking holidays in places like Nepal. Has had no issues being solo.

MsJaneAusten · 16/01/2022 21:54

I’m in my 40s.

Ooh, when I was on my own, I used to go places with Exodus holidays.
Also, The body holiday, St Lucia has no single person supplement, tons of activities included and evening tables for single guests who want to socialise.

Oldenoughtobedead · 16/01/2022 22:08

Morocco - cheap enough to stay in a spa hotel and then do day trips to the mountains. I did a split Marrakesh and Atlas Mountains trip a few years ago. I booked hotel and flight via BA and researched the activities online in advance and then booked locally when I arrived. Great holiday.

SnowySnowSnow · 16/01/2022 22:34

I drove from San Francisco to LA alone - best trip ever!

What about self guided hotel to hotel walks. We have done a few of these in France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Slovenia. Sometimes we have met solo travellers on these holidays.

There are obviously a number of companies do these but I can highly recommend InnTravel. They have always put together really good itineraries, everything well organised and usually hotels that are really nice and individual

MumYourBabyGrewUpToBeACowboy · 17/01/2022 00:11

I used to holiday solo in Paris regularly. I have made lifelong friends there. So much to do, just wandering around and seeing what’s what.

SynchroSwimmer · 17/01/2022 00:12

Neilson beachclub Alana near Zadar Croatia has everything on your wish-list - mountains in walking distance at the back, climbing wall on site, sea at the front, all the kit - and a superb spa….oh and a sky-bar.

When a Thread comes up and you know your a Expert on it well that’s me.Read on,

My dad passed away many years ago and my mum was just absolutely lost as he was her best friend .So as a daughter and only child there is only so much you can do, then you realise that your mum needs friends of her own age.
This is when I found 2 Travel Companies for single people of all ages and they were Solos Holidays and Travelsphere and she loved them both and even went on Cruises from Southampton and made many friends.

She passed away last year at 84 but she enjoyed her life and loved her holidays .
So I hope I’ve helped

I went to Cuba as a solo traveller with a company called Shoestring based in the Netherlands. Everyone was either a solo traveller or a couple and it was great. I'm still Facebook friends with some of them 14 years later. Pandemic permitting I would absolutely recommend.

On my own ie without a tour company, I've been to France, Italy, USA, Ireland.

katscamel · 17/01/2022 02:40

There's a similar thread on chat about singles holidays. Not what you're looking for but I've done an overland trip from Cape Town to Victoria Falls, an Ayurverdic holiday in Sri Lanka (the place was called Plantation Villas and think its still going though more upmarket now) and a detox holiday in Phuket.
Responsible Travel (if they're still around) have sone great ideas for singles breaks in UK and overseas.

Shamoo · 17/01/2022 02:48

Do you want to meet people as part of it at all OP?
I was going to suggest a safari as its amazing, great accommodation if you pick the right place, something to do everyday (walking tours if you want exercise), great food - and you meet can meet people if you want to.

Monty27 · 17/01/2022 03:02

I'm sure there was some online site for people looking to travel but were single. I think it was travelling companion or something. It seemed genuine. Like minded people hooking up. It seemed successful.
I can't remember it clearly but maybe someone else has used it.

My best solo trip was a week in the Dominican Republic at a yoga and surf camp. It was brilliant. Can give you the details if interested.

TwoBlondes · 17/01/2022 03:25

@MumYourBabyGrewUpToBeACowboy I spent this Christmas alone in Paris, it was brilliant.

I've done Greece and Madrid on my own plus six months travelling around Europe in a camper van. I thoroughly recommend it!

Clarinet1 · 17/01/2022 03:56

I went on a trip with Exodus some years ago to see wildlife and experience culture in Romania which I enjoyed very much - they offer all sorts all over the world with varying types and levels of activity. Could be worth surfing their website.

FixItUpChappie · 17/01/2022 03:58

personally I enjoy cities most with lots to do when I travel alone - Paris and surrounds for example.

BarbaraofSeville · 17/01/2022 06:28

I'd be concerned about safety on a solo hiking holiday. If you were lost or injured, would someone miss you? Although if you're hiking in popular areas, chances are someone would find you quickly.

City breaks sound like a good idea, you can just wander around. The choice is endless for that sort of thing. Spain is my favourite place, Seville, Granada, Malaga, Cordoba, Ronda, Cadiz.

What about scuba diving? Lots of solos go on group trips from UK diving shops, or just join a supplier in the UK or abroad. You can do this all over, if you're a beginner, somewhere like Malta or Gozo would be a good shout, or the Canaries, or elsewhere in the Med.

You could stay in a nice hotel, join a local shop to learn to dive if you don't already, and go out on their day trips/shore dives.

Itsnotdeep · 17/01/2022 06:31

I went on a group trip with Intrepid and loved it! I really thought beforehand that I wasn't a group trip kind of a person. But it was brilliant. I paid extra not to share a room, but other than that, spent all my time with the group.

brittanyfairies · 17/01/2022 06:34

I'm looking at a paddle boarding holiday in Croatia with Gutsy Girls holidays. I'm planning on going by myself but I prefer the idea of doing water based activities in a group in case I run into difficulties

Newnormal99 · 17/01/2022 06:44

I went with exodus. Great holiday - ages ranged from 30-55. We had a great group we choose to eat together as a group quite a bit or we broken up into a mix of ever changing small groups depending what people were doing.

They do plenty of active holidays.

MinnieMountain · 17/01/2022 07:11

Action Outdoors do activity holidays, including hiking and climbing. DH has been skiing with them alone and enjoyed it. They’re based in French hostels, so you might have to share but the food is good.

I’ve been with Yoga Hikes (does what it says on the tin) a few times. Most people are alone or pairs of friends and it’s always friendly.

A climbing wall on site?! Amazing. Off to google now.
