BBC Licence fee to be abolished in 2027

Fucking Tories. Why do people vote for them? Why isn't there a viable opposition?

I would protest against this decision, but, oh, they've abolished that too.

This country is going to the (big) dogs. Personally there are two institutions that I feel represent what is good about our country: The NHS and The BBC.

Sadly both have been underfunded and unappreciated by successive governments.

I feel.very sad that more people can't see this. If we don't use it we will loose it.

The variety and quality of radio and television is astounding.

DdraigGoch · 17/01/2022 00:01

So what next?

I'd like to see the genuine "public service broadcasting" separated from the mass-market dross. If someone wants to watch Eastenders and Strictly, they can pay a subscription. If someone wants to watch sports, they can subscribe to BBC Sports (then we'll see just how much Lineker is really worth). Radio 4 and a purely public service TV operation can be funded from taxation, Radio 3 can bid for arts funding.

Tealightsandd · 17/01/2022 00:05

No form of racism - including anti semitism - is acceptable, or 'what is good about our country'.

If the BBC wants to retain it's licence, it needs to sort that issue out.

WindyState · 17/01/2022 00:06

The licence fee is well past it's sell by date.

The idea that you need a licence to watch ANY live TV, whether produced by the BBC or not with that money only going to the BBC is absurd in an age where we have more than 4 channels.

j712adrian · 17/01/2022 00:08

Seem to be a lot of Terry’s Old Boomers on here who just repeat Farage/Trump’s nonsense.

The giveaway? Yes, happy to consume any amount of American TV to the extent of paying through the nose for it. No, not happy to have educational media which might help them form their own views about things.

DdraigGoch · 17/01/2022 00:10
@Andante57 we are the first in our family to get the license. I am from overseas and DH's family never had a tv, his mum used to get regular visits from tv licensing people, she had to take them on a tour of her house to see that there were no TV! They are welcome to take a tour of our flat! We have a projector, but no telly.

Watching a documentary on Gaddafi on BBC iplayer now...

DH's youngest sister is incensed we got the BBC cos she thinks they are a disgusting transphobic organization and we can get news for free... she linked this article to me: www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-57853385

DH says that this just proves its a good decision!
Well yes, I'm glad that the BBC is finally waking up to things.

Put it this way, if I only had to pay for things I wanted to see, I may consider it worth the money. But as things stand I consider it poor value for money. Proponents may well claim that with a multitude of channels it is actually very good value, but if I were to turn the TV on and discover that not one of the channels had anything worth watching on, then it doesn't matter how many there are. £160/year is a big sum when there's not much on.

Smokeahontas · 17/01/2022 00:23

If it’s as feted as some here are saying, then they’ll have no problem funding it through a subscription model. I rarely watch anything on it, so probably wouldn’t be subscribing. I don’t see why I should have to pay a license fee to watch a live broadcast on Sky Sports.

The salaries that the likes of Gary Lineker are on hardly suggest that the BBC is underfunded. On the contrary, they suggest largesse. If the BBC can afford to pay salaries like that whilst simultaneously suffering financial problems, then it's terribly mismanaged.
AllThePogs · 17/01/2022 00:29

@knark

The BBC produces consistently high quality tv and radio broadcasting, despite having their funding cut and cut again. They have journalistic freedom, free from commercial demands or editorial ownership of a single man.

I'm sick of capitalism and commercialism and consumerism. This government relies on soundbites and division and has no shame in legislating against those who would hold it to account.

If you watch BBC iplayer, you need legally to have a licence.

onlychildhamster · 17/01/2022 00:33

@AllThePogs which is why we are watching bbc iplayer after we bought the license!

phishy · 17/01/2022 00:40

It also fucks me off that we have to pay for a tv license yet people abroad can watch BBC iPlayer for free with a VPN.

BBC need to protect their content better.

phishy · 17/01/2022 00:43

@AlexaShutUp

I'm really gutted about this. The BBC is trusted and respected around the world and is part of the UK's "soft power". Personally, I'd happily pay the licence fee to sustain radio 4 alone. Instead, we'll end up with a bunch of commercial crap on all of the channels.

Fucking tories.

I don’t want to pay to show the UK in a good light abroad. Fuck that.
LuckyMeISeeGhosts · 17/01/2022 01:06

@onlychildhamster

DH and i have just bought a TV license in protest of the government's defunding of the BBC/axing the license fee. We don't own a tv and have never watched any BBC shows in our lives. But we feel that what the government is doing is unreasonable and we really cannot afford to lose the state broadcaster just because its favourable politically for the tories!
Loool.

The reporting of that story was shocking.
screwthem · 17/01/2022 07:02

Good.

They waste money like there's no tomorrow.

We have to pay them to access other live services even when we don't use them.

There's fuck-all of interest to me, and whenever I have tried tuned in in the past, I have never seen anything "high quality".

They are not unbiased - they have helped Stonewall to become the creepy shitstorm it's become, using my fee partly to preach out across the world.

I hope it's a massive reality slap in the face for every overprivileged twerp who's been working there.

You'll just pay the fee through your Internet connection instead. Plus some profit for whoever collects it, plus some more tax.
Stephthegreat · 17/01/2022 07:15

Hard to justify charging people so much when you’ve harboured pedophiles and turned a blind eye to a lot of other corrupt behaviour.

NashvilleQueen · 17/01/2022 07:36

That's how markets work. I am sure Lineker has previously said he's turned down more money to work elsewhere. If they want the best (and he's seen as the best) then they have to compete. The fact that people could earn more elsewhere but stay says something about the quality of the BBC.

Look it's not perfect but commercial TV is mostly shit. Look at America with it adverts every ten mins and weird breaks in programming to allow it.

People who say they never watch BBC output I hope don't watch Strictly, or Line of Duty, or David Attenborough or Newsnight or CBeebies etc etc. Or their children using Bitesize. Or listening to Radio 2 on a Sunday morning.

For the money you pay across so much quality content it's great value IMO. I've already mentioned R4. It's the soundtrack to me life. I have learned so much and enjoyed so much over the past thirty years of my life. I'd be lost without it.

I suppose getting us to talk about the bbc has moved us on the Johnsons parties tho eh? Hmm

Ringsender2 · 17/01/2022 07:45

@JackieWeaverHandforthCouncil

Poor BBC, bent over backwards trying to placate the Tories practically turning into a Tory HQ press office and all for nothing. Murdoch still got his wish before he died. Get ready for the 10 minute ad breaks plus subscription fee.
This!

"People who say they never watch BBC output I hope don't watch Strictly, or Line of Duty, or David Attenborough or Newsnight or CBeebies etc etc. Or their children using Bitesize. Or listening to Radio 2 on a Sunday morning."

If it helps, no, I've never watched any of these (nor do I want to).

User135644 · 17/01/2022 07:53

You do know this is a dead cat from the Tories to get headlines and attention off the parties (particularly for the papers/media that would love to see the end of the BBC).
