I hear this term getting bandied around as an insult. Surely it is better to be an affluent socialist than a well off Tory!?

That would be a constructive way forward wouldn't it? I'll even say yes in advance. It's not like I'm in charge and either of us is going to get it.
My powers of deduction must be failing me. That seems an utterly pointless waste of time.

@senua it's obvious you have nothing constructive to say but just like calling people names.

[quote Tealightsandd]What they failed to account for was that as people's lifespans increased, so too did their need for treatment. There can never be enough funding.

Yes the Blair New Labour government's anti smoking crusade did indeed fail to take that into account. The fall in the number of smokers has two consequences. Longer life expectancies, and a significant loss of tax revenue.

Yes, Minister hit the nail upon the head. Sir Humphrey's "we're saving many more lives than we otherwise could because of those smokers who voluntarily lay down their lives for their friends" is a brilliant way to sum up health economics.

Well! Never heard this. I came here thinking it means people who can only socialising while drinking.Blush

Welp! even. Not Well.

Champagne Socialist equals an insult through hypocrisy.

I think it equates to the ignorance of those that have, proclaiiming to support the have nots. All very noble but not really realistic or honest.

I agree it is a form of virtue signalling and protectionism. To want others to have more so they don't cause civil unrest or revolution and take yours.

The problem is no matter what ideology you subscribe to there will never be equality. Man is a greedy beast and life is not fair.

Was it Margret Thacher who said 'socialism is fine until the money runs out'

London absolutely does NOT hog the investment. Or if it does, it certainly doesn't go to Londoners. London is the epicentre of the public health housing and homelessness emergency. Two thirds of ALL of England's homeless families are in London. You don't get more deprived than being without a home.

The region of Inner London East is the least wealthy, with median wealth of £26,400 per person.

citymonitor.ai/government/why-aren-t-working-class-people-living-cities-also-left-behind-4694

the reality is that working class communities, especially in cities, have been just as “left behind” as those elsewhere in the UK. Even 72 people dying in the Grenfell Tower tragedy, a preventable fire which happened within sight of Parliament, hasn’t dislodged the dominant narrative of London as a leafy cosmopolitan elite bubble.
