AIBU to be surprised that a 6 year old has watched Squid Games?

Had a play date today and towards the end the kids were getting hungry and tired so we all sat down to have a snack and my son’s friend asked if we could watch TV and one said “can we watch squid games on Netflix?”. Now I have older siblings so my 6 year old has watched some technically older rated stuff like Harry Potter films but squid games?! I laughed and said “don’t be silly you don’t watch squid games and he said he’d seen it”. That’s weird isn’t it - I’m not being overly precious am I ? He has an older brother who is 8 (same as my eldest and my 8 year old certainly hasnt watched nor would have a clue what squid games is).

He hasn’t watched Squid Games. He’s heard older children talk about it or seen the game on Roblox. He was chancing it thinking you would let him watch. Please don’t judge his parents. Most of the children at the school I work in would lead you to believe that they had all seen it too. They haven’t.

GrandTheftWalrus · 15/01/2022 18:24

My 5yo goes about saying red light/green light. She's certainly never seen it so I'm assuming she's pick it up at school.

Karenity · 15/01/2022 18:24

Agree he clearly hasn't seen it if he's repeatedly getting the title wrong! He was hoping you'd be a soft touch. Tough teatties, small chancer.

PotteringAlong · 15/01/2022 18:26

My 7 year old can talk knowledgeably about fortnite. He has never played it in his life. He’s heard about it somewhere, knows it’s “forbidden” and is trying to sound big and clever / trying it on.

You say your 8 year old wouldn’t have a clue what squid games is. I can almost guarantee that that’s not true. Ask him how and see what he says.

You know red light/green light is a common game right? That's why it's in the show!
Sally872 · 15/01/2022 18:29

Yabu to believe the six year old. Unless the parents are paying no attention at all. Even then I don't think a 6 year old would have the attention span for it.

Darbs76 · 15/01/2022 18:29

That does seem very young but I wouldn’t be surprised. My DD told me she had watched it, I had no idea what it was! She’s nearly 14, since found out it’s quite gruesome. But I can’t police everything she watched

Sally872 · 15/01/2022 18:30

"My mum let's me" is a common lie when children are chancing their arm.

Sometimeswinning · 15/01/2022 18:31

Yes you are completely unreasonable to be surprised. I seriously doubt a 6 year old (obviously thinking about my dd6 and her friends) would have the slightest interest in it. My 6 year old does know about red light, green light and the result. That will be from my older 2!

janicewheeler · 15/01/2022 18:37

They'll know about it from Roblox, YouTube and school !

Confrontayshunme · 15/01/2022 18:39

I think lots of kids have seen memes of it on TikTok or trailers and excerpts, but as a Year 1 TA, we had a group of kids playing who clearly knew EXACTLY the plot, as it went beyond RLGL. I chatted to one of them, and he had watched it on his mum's phone netflix app. He had also seen Sirenhead, and played Call of Duty and other violent games. The class teacher had a very uncomfortable conversation with mum, and it turns out that she had no clue about tv or game ratings and never supervised him. In the country where she is from, if it is on tv, the government has deemed it okay for everyone!

Whitefire · 15/01/2022 18:40

I've hidden it on Netflix, I was getting fed up of the trailer starting every time I went on. Even my 15 year old has never watched it.

Bringmeadog · 15/01/2022 18:42

@Darbs76 as a parent, that’s exactly what you should be doing.
I despair, really!

GrandTheftWalrus · 15/01/2022 18:44

@unvillage yes I know but it's usually done as "what's the time Mr wolf" where I am. Its possible that school play red light/green light at pe time.

skippy67 · 15/01/2022 18:47

He hasn't seen it. He's probably heard about it at school or something and was trying his luck.

HelloFrostyMorning · 15/01/2022 18:47

Blimey, no-one under 17/18 should be watching that tbh.

HelloFrostyMorning · 15/01/2022 18:48

As others have said though, I doubt he has seen it.

Arethechildreninbedyet · 15/01/2022 18:52

Bloody hell if they have shown it him that’s some fucking poor parenting. There was a poster on an earlier squid game thread that said she let her nine year old watch it and didn’t see anything wrong with it.

It was so graphic that I turned it off that would literally traumatise a child.

manseymoo1987 · 15/01/2022 18:57

It's not cheap they've watched the series. There's a Roblox game and kids have been playing the games red light etc in school.

mumof2exhausted · 15/01/2022 19:05

I don’t believe he has seen it (although he was adamant) I find it equally surprising if he’s heard about it at school as surely 11 year olds shouldn’t be watching it either? We have parental controls on Netflix / prime etc so they can only view stuff that’s for children. I tried watching it when first came out and found it grim so didn’t continue. My 8 year old has never heard of it and he has older friends at school through sports

When I was that age, we were all claiming to have watched Nightmare on Elm Street. Of course, none of us actually had and I suspect this is the case here. A 6yo wouldn't even understand SG, have any empathy for the characters or even have the attention span to get beyond the first few minutes of any episode.

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 15/01/2022 19:15

Chatting shit and chancing his arm. Pay him no mind.

It's a school game, no? I played it at school (outside of the UK to be fair)
GrandTheftWalrus · 15/01/2022 19:25

@DickMabutt73962 it's usually what's the time Mr wolf here. But like I said earlier they could be doing it in pe.

You're aware surely children don't live at school

They will have external influence, overhear adults, friends of friends, their besties 15 year old brother

The list goes on
