Anyone else think 'Civil Servant Sue Gray' needs a better description?

A week ago, I'd never heard of Sue Gray.

Now - every second sentence on the news seems to reference 'Sue Gray will sort it, Sue Gray is investigating, Sue Gray is very experienced, Sue Gray will save the world.

She must clearly be an extremely senior, qualified person to be given this task, yet just referencing her as 'Sue Gray' doesn't seem deferential enough at all.

So hello, Sue Gray if you're reading this!

Do you have a title?

Do you introduce yourself as, "hello, I'm civil servant, Sue Gray", here's a selfie of me in the garden"

Do you feel like a man would be referenced differently, maybe, Senior Civil Servant and Investigator, Colin Brown?

Sue Gray. Sue Gray. Sue Gray. AIBU to think:

Come on news, give the woman the gravitas she maybe deserves.

It's a very nondescript name isn't it. Belying the fact she's actually a stone-cold terminator. A bit like Roy Batty from Blade Runner.

CherryAndAlmond · 15/01/2022 08:13

There was a profile on the radio about her. She sounds amazing. Someone said she basically runs the country.

RunningInTheWind · 15/01/2022 08:16

It’s better than “Wayne Rooney prostitute Helen Wood”.

hopeishere · 15/01/2022 08:29

She's well known Northern Ireland where she was widely expected to be head of the civil service! But was too outspoken for the local politicians!!

Bojo wouldn't have appointed her to investigate himself if she was really going to come to any other conclusion that didn't exonerate him... just like Lord Geidt did over the flat re decoration at £130,000.

Love the last sentence of this

She sounds fab tbh

Squirrel26 · 15/01/2022 10:48

I’m not convinced Sue Gray exists. I think she’s like ‘Inspector Sands’ on the London Underground.

Notonthestairs · 15/01/2022 10:53

She's apparently expert at removing paper trails to avoid Freedom of Information requests.

I'm not convinced that bodes well in terms of producing an independent review.

An old article but have to say based on this I’m not convinced either.

"Reports to Civil Service head Simon Case, who reports to the prime minister"

Er, the Simon Case who had to be taken off the case because he too, was at the boozy parties?

So she's being asked to investigate her boss and her boss's boss?

Why do they keep referring to her as 'independent' then? That suggests someone brought in from the outside, not someone who probably got the party invites.

Doubleraspberry · 15/01/2022 11:31

I’ve worked with Christopher Geidt, who is a really decent man.

I’ve also worked in the same government area as Sue Gray. Everyone is terrified of her.

Piglet89 · 15/01/2022 11:39

The probe is just a whitewash I reckon.

Why are the police not involved like they were with all of the other poor buggers suspected of breaking those rules? Nobody did an investigation on them first, did they?

TheSixthSickSheik · 15/01/2022 11:40

I think something like “The Equaliser” or “The Enforcer” would be better.

shouldistop · 15/01/2022 11:43

Second Permanent Secretary in the Cabinet Office.

From Wikipedia

Fallsballs · 15/01/2022 11:45

I took it for a Johnson damage limitation exercise by procuring a woman and referencing her like a terminator side kick but omitting the fact he’s her boss really.
Load of balls really but I love to be proved wrong.

FilthyJourno · 15/01/2022 12:04

Namechange for this - the BBC did a show about her a few years ago (could do with an update) www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/b09gz5nz

They said she was the most secretive person they'd ever profiled. I suspect a background doing something rather mysterious/secret given the whole "oh let's go and run a pub on the irish border" thing.

She's been a lot more "out in the open" since then, but it is UTTERLY LUDICROUS that she is being given the job of reporting on her own boss and no-one is critiquing this. Even the most honest/qualified person would be put in a spot trying to do this.

I think it says in the show I linked above that there's a suspicion her real skill is interpreting the rules to achieve the result her bosses want.

Can you imagine being given the job of writing a report on your own bosses? Bonkers. I think journalists from all outlets should be saying this every time her report is mentioned!

Notonthestairs · 15/01/2022 12:22

Very interesting profile (or non profile!) - thanks Filthy!

Unhomme · 15/01/2022 12:31

She's the permanent secretary at the dept for levelling up (under gove) but used to be the head of propriety and ethics in the cabinet office, before going to Northern Ireland for a year.

FilthyJourno · 15/01/2022 12:31

thanks Filthy

Grin I quite like my new name

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 20/01/2022 09:18

Well whoever she is she's taking a fucking age to deliver this report.

Has she gone skiing or something?
