DS is 16, and has been unwell for a few days which I suspect is a chest infection (he had covid a few months ago so he should have some immunity)

However, today he has been complaining of feeling more unwell and hasn't eaten and hasn't drank much either. He is now asleep and I'm worried.

DP says I'm overreacting and he'll be fine, but I'm thinking of calling 111 but I'm not sure if that'll BU?

Won't hurt to call and get some advice

What does he mean by unwell? Temperature, coughing, difficulty breathing etc? 111 call handlers would need that sort of info. If he’s sleeping calmly then I’d be inclined to leave him for the moment, unless he has a red flag symptom (high temp that won’t come down, struggling to breathe for example). They would probably encourage fluids to prevent dehydration although in an adult you do have to go a few days without drinking before action will be taken. If he were to see an out of hours gp now there are very few pharmacies open to get any prescribed medicines so i think I would wait for him to wake and call then. I work in out of hours healthcare, that’s my take on it. If you are able to tell details of symptoms I might be able to help more.

I called 111 when I had a bad chest infection, was seen at the out of hours centre by a nurse practitioner & given antibiotics which helped me recover.

I definitely think you should phone 111.

I would wait until the morning if he’s asleep now. They’ll make you wake him up to answer questions and the best thing to recover when you’re ill is sleep.
