To think this meeting is something bad

I do suffer from a bit of anxiety so want to know if I am being unreasonable

DH has just had a text from his manager asking him to go into the office in person on his day of and "catch up"

Catch up with what?? Dh said he can't think of anything he's done wrong, followed every procedure, all safety adhered to, productivity excellent, he doesn't get involved in any workplace shit talking, so he thinks it's just a catch up.

I think they can schedule those when he's on shift! Not expect him to give his free time. But also, I'm worried he's about to get sacked. He shouldn't, but I'm worried. Who vaguely asks for a catch up in person?? If it was a catch up, it could be done over the phone!

Redundancy or bonus. Good luck. What will be will be

thepastisanothercountry · 14/01/2022 15:23

Dear Boss

I'm not working that day can we do Xday?

Please can you tell me what this is about - is there anything I need to prepare; or concerns you wish to raise?

Kind regards
Mr. Magickit

No reply or a fob off = probably not great

An explanation or something about wanting to talk about possible opportunities or simply sorry forgot it was your day off just wanted stl see how everything was going - probably OK

Most likely they just forgot it was his day off

Kite22 · 14/01/2022 15:34

Perfectly reasonable and normal IMO for a Manager to want a F2F catch up every now and then.
Not reasonable to want to do it on his day off, but, as others have said, might it be feasible that he hasn't checked the rota and doesn't realise it is a day off ?
Surely dh just messages back "I'm not available then, what about X date?"

I wouldn't, in any way jump to conclude it was for redundancy.

potter5 · 14/01/2022 16:05

I've been called in to the office for a "catch up" next week. WFH at present. My boss has already told me that his job is changing so I am expecting redundancy.
Still there are lots of jobs out there.

Alicetheowl · 14/01/2022 16:21

It does sound like bad news, but could be that they need to change shift patterns, a colleague is on disciplinary for something so need to check whether he witnessed anything, or the person above him is moving on and they want to know whether he might like to apply. Or a restructure, which might mean redundancy, or the opportunity to take on more responsibility with a possible pay rise.

JustFrustrated · 14/01/2022 17:57

Has he asked?

MagicKit · 14/01/2022 19:26

He's spoken to them. It's just to check in that things are ok at work because DH does the night shift and the staff manager isn't usually there and just to make sure that DH understands a new system for clocking in and out. I think they literally covered all of that on the phone just then but I get the distinct impression that the manager has been told they're meant to have had face to face meetings with all the employees and he's missed all the night ones. Basically DH still has to meet face to face on his day off. He asked to move it to when he was on shift but manager very much sounded like he expects to be clocked off by then. Funny how he doesn't want to conduct the meeting on HIS own time!

The words that will get any meeting instantly rescheduled: yeah, course, I'll be there but I'll have to bring my 2 year-old.

Georgeskitchen · 14/01/2022 19:33

It should be scheduled during his shift.

LethargicActress · 14/01/2022 19:37

Manager sounds like a CF. If this is something that’s his responsibility to get done then your DH shouldn’t have to go in on his day off at all and if anyone has to work free overtime it should be the manager, especially when he doesn’t have to routinely deal with working nights.

Is your DHs job insecure enough that he feels he has to go along with this? If not, there will just have to be something unexpected come up for his day off.

Kite22 · 14/01/2022 21:07

Of course, potentially, there is the capacity /wording in the contract that all employees have to work X shifts PLUS 3 training shifts / meetings / workshops / whatever a year on other days - that isn't that uncommon. Oddly, my ds had to go in and complete a training update on what is one of his rest days last week. It is part of the contract across the year.

thepeopleversuswork · 14/01/2022 21:13

It does sound likely that it’s something significant and potentially bad. But not necessarily something he has done wrong. If it’s anything to do with change the workforce, the structure of the company or the ownership of the company that would merit an invitation to chat like that. I wouldn’t be overly concerned about anything disciplinary or anything but it does sound important.

I'd ask if he's being paid overtime for his travel in and the meeting time! Cheeky feckers!
LadyWithLapdog · 15/01/2022 07:50

Is that part of 'well-being' checks scheduled during days off and likely therefore to reduce his well-being?

IWentAwayIStayedAway · 15/01/2022 07:58

Clock in and out for the meeting so they are paid for it

MagicKit · 17/01/2022 14:50

He went to the meeting. It could so easily have been conducted over the phone. Basically a wellness check. He wanted to make sure that DH was getting enough sleep because he had a migraine recently for the first time. Why did he have to drive all the way in there on his day off for that??

OP posts:
SummerHouse · 17/01/2022 14:59

That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard! Calling someone in on their day off to check on their well-being. I have no words.

Sorry op, what a waste of your worry. I think I know your migraine thread and I think this is all the more reason for DP to seek another job especially ditching the nights.

daytriptovulcan · 17/01/2022 15:14

Wow, what a total shit his boss is.

Doubledoorsontogarden · 17/01/2022 15:41

He should get the time back but other than that I see no issue with this. My management team are seeing people F2F now, I’m seeing staff in a public space F2F

Ploppy1322 · 17/01/2022 15:42

Honestly, being called in on your day off is bad news 💐

FeedMeSantiago · 17/01/2022 17:08

I wouldn't be impressed at a 'wellbeing check' being scheduled on my day off!

Kite22 · 17/01/2022 19:01

I think it is right and proper that management should meet staff F2F at least every few months. Very different from answering Questions over the phone. (Bit like 2 yr checks by the HV.....).
I do think it should be in the employee's work time however.

WeirdlyKind · 17/01/2022 19:03

Had this a while ago. It was related to something a colleague had done and they wanted me to give evidence. Day off was so I couldn't see/speak to the person in question.

sweetbellyhigh · 17/01/2022 19:07

Good result given what you were expecting.

But he would have probably been better rested if he hadn't been kept awake worrying about mystery meetings !

WeirdlyKind · 18/01/2022 14:29

I don't get the glasses thing but thank you!
