To ask how many cloves of garlic you'd add to a single pasta dish?

Ok it may be a large dish, like enough for lunch also the next day but otherwise a single serving for one person for dinner.

I'd say at least 5. (Cloves of garlic)

Yeah maybe 4 or 5. I cba with peeling and chopping it though so I use Gia garlic paste, would easily use half a tube Grin

2

RasputinsPickledPenis · 14/01/2022 07:20

If following a recipe, at least double what's stated.

errnerrcallnernnernnern · 14/01/2022 07:22

Depends on how big. I used 2 big cloves today. On average I’d say yes, 4-5.

Svara · 14/01/2022 07:24

One decent sized one per serving

Pikaso · 14/01/2022 07:25

4 - 5

Have you noticed on cooking programs the bulbs of garlic (normally hung up near the window 😂) are massive? Certainly twice the size of the ones we tend to get from supermarket in the UK so if a recipe calls for two cloves, I presume they’re talking about one of those massive bulbs and double it

PiscesScot · 14/01/2022 07:28

The larger the garlic is cut and the longer it’s cooked, the weaker the taste will be.

So if you mince it and add it only in the last few minutes of cooking, you need fewer cloves for a strong garlic flavour.

Only just learned this though, so previously I’d have started cooking with onions & 4-5 cloves of garlic too!

purplesequins · 14/01/2022 07:30

depends.
if cooking them 4 or 5
if crushing some in after cooking then 1-2 (much prefer this tbh, much fresher taste)

purplesequins · 14/01/2022 07:31

or even better - roast a whole bulb and squeeze in the soft roasted garlic. the whole lot.

PotBelliesGiveGoodLoving · 14/01/2022 07:32

Depends on how much garlic is in the house at the time.

hugr · 14/01/2022 07:32

I made a garlic and mushroom lasagna the other day that called for 40 cloves of garlic (the recipe roasted the bulbs rather than minced for a mild flavour) and it was gorgeous

MangoBiscuit · 14/01/2022 07:40

@hugr that sounds delicious, could you share the recipe please?

Long running joke in this house (not sure where it came from) is that the only recipe that uses just one clove of garlic, is a recipe for one clove of garlic.

40??? Is that a typo? Christ the vampires will be staying well away from your house!

Me too.

I try to pick the most generously sized bulbs when buying.

heyitsthistle · 14/01/2022 07:44

3-4 ~cloves~ bulbs Grin

gogohm · 14/01/2022 07:46

At least 2-3 times what's in the recipe.

SpideySenseTingles · 14/01/2022 07:46

This thread is making me realise that I have been doing garlic wrong Blush

I've been crushing two cloves and adding them in just after the onions in most dishes

3scape · 14/01/2022 07:48

It would depend on the pasta dish!

PrincessPaws · 14/01/2022 07:51

5? Bloody hell I've got heartburn just thinking about that much garlic 🤣

Luckingfovely · 14/01/2022 07:53

Where it says clove, I generally assume bulb. Grin

(Especially since all the supermarkets only have TINY bulbs right now)!

Spaceman1 · 14/01/2022 07:57

Is better to put the garlic in after cooking at the end? Wouldn't it still be raw?

whiteworldgettingwhiter · 14/01/2022 07:57

1! Too much garlic doesn't agree with me...

MajorCarolDanvers · 14/01/2022 07:59

Most recipes say 1-2 but I actually add 2-3.

I like garlic but 5 is a lot.

Porcupineintherough · 14/01/2022 07:59

Does it not depend on the recipe and the strength of the garlic Confused

My sister from another mister Grin

Also, slow roasted garlic in the oven, cooked in foil with a little onion and salt, then spooned out and spread on crusty bread with some nice butter is the best food imaginable!
