Mix up or pick n mix

Please help settle a debate. I was reminiscing with a friend about the 50p mix up I used to get a kid at the local corner shop. She laughed at me and said it’s not called a mix up is called a pick n mix. I correctly told her that a pick n mix is the overly expensive sweets you pay for per 100g and comes in the snazzy stripy bags at the cinema whereas a mix up is a small selection of penny sweets that come In a small white bag. She completely disagrees and now I’m unsure if I’m wrong.
YANBU it’s definitely called a mix up and your friend is a Wally.
YABU it’s a pick n mix and you have been saying it wrong your whole life.

South East in the 70s and a mix up (5p or 10p usually) was a self selected choice of penny sweets.

Pic'n'mix was/is different as it's bought by weight.

somethingischasingme · 13/01/2022 20:43

10p mix up! I had 30p pocket money and a 10p mix up was a definite Saturday choice!!

ISpyCobraKai · 13/01/2022 20:44

I'm from the North East and its a mix up in a white bag.
Pic and mix is at woolies.
I remember Butterfly in Metro Centre too, loved that place.

beautifullymad · 13/01/2022 20:44

10p mix up was pre weighed in little white paper bags by the till. You didn't get to see what you were buying. It was priced as a bargain as you got a few extra.

In cinemas now and Woolworths historically the pick and mix was buckets of sweets you chose yourself and put in a bag to be weighed. These were expensive. Definitely not the same as the 10p mix up bags!

iklboo · 13/01/2022 20:47

We went for quantity. Four mojos for a penny, two black jacks / fruit salad for a penny, white mice a penny each, bubblies (Bazooka Joe bubblegum) 2p each, Refreshers 2p each, Swizzels lolly 2 for 5p etc. You could get a lot of sweets if you were canny.
@CeeceeBloomingdale you explained that a lot better than I did 😂😂
In my mind they are two completely different things. My friend is somewhat confused by these responses as she was certain it's called a pick n mix
How can she think it's pick n mix when you don't pick Grin
Called 10p mix where I grew up (NW)

MrsPotatoHead22 · 13/01/2022 20:49

Pic n mix!

LuckyCharm9 · 13/01/2022 20:50

Devon here, we used to get a 10/20/50p mix up from the corner shop. Pick and mix was what you got in Woolworths and was way more expensive.
My favourites were the mojo chews (spearmint was the best), those chocolate cup things in the foil wrappers and the jelly cherries. The chocolate cups were 5p in my shop!
Our corner shop also had a slush puppie machine, with all the best flavours I.e cola and cherry, they don’t taste the same nowadays.

OneTimeThrowAway · 13/01/2022 20:51

A mix up is a random or chosen selection bagged by the shop keeper

Pick n mix is a help yourself counter

Patty101 · 13/01/2022 20:52

About 30 years ago in the NW it was a 10p mix. You got to point out which sweets you wanted, most were a penny, but my favourite were the little chocolate cup things in a coloured foil case, like a cup cake case. But they were 2p.

Ive just had a flashback of being given an extra 10p by my mum because I'd had a really good report from parents evening the night before. I was so excited I thought I would burst because I knew that meant I could get 10 of the chocolate cup things.

Happy times!

IHaveToSay · 13/01/2022 20:56

YABU. It’s neither, it’s just a ‘mix’. So ‘can I have a 20p mix please?’, and the shop keeper would pick a random selection that came to 20p.

Darbs76 · 13/01/2022 20:57

Pick and mix

DroopyClematis · 13/01/2022 20:57

Pick 'n' mix was Woolworths trade mark I believe.
It didn't exist when I was a child , but some shops did 'mix ups.'

Or you asked for a paper cone, which the shop assistant held then you told the assistant what you wanted from behind a glass shelf.

PourMeAGlassOfMilk · 13/01/2022 20:57

YANBU

Pick and mix is where you pick your own sweets.

A 10p mix up was a little bag of sweets already chosen. Pink and white striped paper bags at our local shop.

2 totally different things

Hellocatshome · 13/01/2022 20:58

Mix Up is already in a bag you dont get to choose the sweets. Pick n Mix you pick the sweets then weigh them and pay a fortune.

TruffleShuffles · 13/01/2022 20:58

YANBU OP, in the Black Country you would call a small bag of already picked and sealed sweets a 10p/20p mix up. It would consist of sweets normally used for a pick and mix but it would only be called a pick and mix if you had picked it yourself.

Darbs76 · 13/01/2022 20:58

Years ago at the local shop we called it a ‘penny mix’ as most items were 1p (80’s)

GrandDuchessRomanov · 13/01/2022 20:59

YANBU it's definitely a mix up

gogohm · 13/01/2022 21:00

Never seen a mix up, it was half penny sweets which doubled to a penny due to them getting rid of 1/2p when I was a kid, you picked what you wanted

pinkstripeycat · 13/01/2022 21:02

1970s in corner shop and Woolworths was pick and mix for 1/2p sweets

ultrablue · 13/01/2022 21:03

Shops by me when I was little were a 10 p mix ( upgraded to 20p if I was with my Dad), you could choose your own sweets and if you were savvy choose some 1/2p sweets to get more for your money Smile

undercoverhero74 · 13/01/2022 21:04

Well I'm certainly surprised at the amount of people who have never heard of a mix up. I agree with previous posters and it must definitely be a regional thing. I'm from the south

I send DD to the local shop (on her own) for a 20p mix up when she is doing my head in. Small bag with a random assortment of sweets.
Pick n mix is a treat from a supermarket when she has been especially good (star of the week )

traintraveller · 13/01/2022 21:05

Was called a mixture when I was a child, usually 10p and the shop let you choose what you wanted. Pick n mix you had to go to woolworths for and we didn't have one nearby.

XiCi · 13/01/2022 21:06

This thread has brought on an unexpected craving for kola cubes Grin. Loved pineapple cubes too.
