Parking - being blocked in.

Had a lot of issues with people using my driveway and blocking me in, so my patience for it is very thin.

Today a van was parked completely blocking me in. I had to go out and I checked with next door to see if it was theirs. I knocked and eventually a woman came out of the side gate (think she was doing work there as never seen her before and she was carrying a hoover).

First thing she said to me was "I'm moving it" - didn't even apologise. She then demanded to know how long I would be gone for. I told her its irrelevant and she shouldn't be parking across my driveway at all and I need access to be able to get out.

She then again said would I be more then just half an hour because I could just wait for her to finish and that she didn't know where else to park (could have blocked the driveway of the house she was working at but chose mine?)

Anyway she did move and when I came back she'd again blocked access to my driveway and I couldn't park on my own property. My neighbour works in his living room which faces the driveway and saw the whole thing and was sat smirking in the window - we have never had any issue before this and I thought he was a nice guy,

Aibu to be so wound up and upset by this?

He's obviously not a nice guy after all.

I don't know what you can do but I would be furious too

If it's a dropped kerb and she blocks you in again, inform her that next time you'll take photos and inform your local police. I believe that's an offence (but it isn't if she's preventing you getting back in)

Or, when you come home, block your smirking neighbour's drive and don't answer your door.

sunshinesupermum · 13/01/2022 15:21

It is illegal to park blocking someone from their home.

MaggieFS · 13/01/2022 15:22

He's a twat and had probably told her not to block him in but it's ok to block you in.

Be firm and tell her not to block you in.

ItsRainingTacos · 13/01/2022 15:23

@sunshinesupermum sadly it's not. We have had to take matter into our own hands when the police said they can't do anything except check it's not a stolen car or something like that.

No it isn't. Rude and a breach of the Highway Code, but not illegal. You can't block people in (OP has a point there) but you can block them out.

Park on your neighbour’s drive if it is free next time it happens. When they stop using yours, you will happily park on your own property. As for random cars, can you put a sign up saying ‘No Parking on or over driveway as access required”. You shouldn’t have to, but some people are tossers.

Ilovecharliecat · 14/01/2022 00:00

You should have told her to park on your drive and blocked her in when you got home - sorry that’s just me being childish 😁

MyOtherProfile · 14/01/2022 00:02

Definitely park across the neighbour's drive.

Chloemol · 14/01/2022 00:03

Of it happens again with her I would insist she moves it and blocks the drive if the house she is working in

I would also try and find out if she works for an agency and complain to them

If i had to go out and the van was still blocking my drive I would simply block the neighbours. That should wipe the smirk of his face

That's a great idea! Grin

I’m afraid I’d have just sat in my horn until she came out and moved. But I’ve had a bad day.

TyrannosaurusRights · 14/01/2022 00:42

Block in the neighbour on his drive.

Start in on the wine. Ensure you’re still a bit tipsy whenever he wants to go out.

Shamoo · 14/01/2022 00:44

Agree you just block her in next time, and say it’s not convenient to move when they come and knock. Every time!

TheBestofTimesTheWorstofTimes · 14/01/2022 01:03

In what universe could you possibly be being unreasonable?

HiJenny35 · 14/01/2022 01:07

Nope not anymore this was changed a few years ago. You can have a car ticketed and lifted, towed away now for parking over your drive either if you are parked up it or now. I do it regularly. It was changed at least 5 years ago.

cabbageking · 14/01/2022 01:12

Park across your own drive and leave your drive nice and clear.
