AIBU to ask how to install a camera?!

Using AIBU for traffic but it's an honest question too.

My solicitor said to install a camera, like a doorbell camera, in my bedroom as ex is not allowed in there.

I have an old fashioned door bell and feel too old to understand how these video ones work! I am guessing I need a wireless one. But how can I put it in my bedroom? Would it have to be actually on the door or could I install it on the wall as you come in, to motion activate it?

Or is there any better alternative?

I feel OLD. I feel like I'm out of place on this world of technology and I’ve got covid so I feel I'll and can't even go out to the shop to ask them and educate myself .

AIBU to ask here because I'm old and decrepit and full of covid?

And do you have anything helpful to give me?!

Just buy a cctv small camera off Amazon they are about £50 and put it inside your bedroom facing your door up high on a shelf so it can see all your bedroom

There's plenty of reviews about cctv cameras and which ones to go for

We have Nest cameras, they're very easy to set up. They just need to be plugged in for power in a normal socket and connected to wifi. They can be set to go off if your phone is nearby and they will send an alert to your phone if it detects motion or noise. Ours captured some lovely footage of our burglar admiring a poundshop bracelet and sticking it in a pocket.

I thought you have to pay a monthly cost with best cameras?

Curiousmouse · 13/01/2022 13:57

Nest

Your links are just taking me to the main Amazon and eBay websites but not to the item

Just out of interest, would I be able to actually use a doorbell just propped up in the bedroom away from the door, so it can capture someone walking in through the door?

John Lewis, Argos and eBay have a good selection of indoor security cameras. www.johnlewis.com/browse/electricals/smart-home/smart-home-monitoring/smart-camera/_/N-7f1oZ1yzdmyx We have the TP-Link KC120, but brought for much less than the current price. If you're happy with just 2 days storage then a free account is sufficient (you can download clips), but if you'd like a longer period of storage then you have to pay for it. Picture quality is good. My only complaint is that the intercom feature which allows you to shout at "the burglar" isn't loud enough. You wouldn't be able to shout at them and scare the bejabbers out of them! The camera requires an electricity supply so you need to have a nearby plug or extension lead.

Only if you want upgrades like saving longer clips (otherwise the default is 12 seconds) and editing motion detection areas on the screen.

We don't pay anything for our 3 NEST cameras

ThreeLittleDots · 13/01/2022 14:44

Oh ignore me actually - it's NEOS cameras we have, not NEST!

If you want a good 2k video doorbell type. The "Euphy doorbell and homebase" stores all the video on the homebase it's a little box. This has no subscription and the quality is superb.

If your looking for CCTV Reolink POE (power over Ethernet packages are very good value.
These are essentially video cameras with a box that records everything 24/7. The cameras are called POE as they take their power from the network cable plugged into the recording box, so you don't need extra power, just attach your camera plug in a network cable from camera to the recorder and away you go 🙂.

I also forgot to mention both systems can be viewed online and in your phone.

Thank you everyone!

I have these, they are really easy to set up. Just download the app and it talks you through the set up. If you want the recordings saved then you have to have the ring protect plan but it is only about £2.99 a month. If you only want to be notified if he goes in and real time viewing then you don't need the plan.

A relative has got a little elf camera for their dog.
It’s £20 on Amazon, has an app, notifications if someone sets it off and records.
