AIBU to be hesitant to use a Hairdesser who has awful hair?

So I’ve been to a relatively new salon twice now and had lovely haircuts (I’ve got a complicated fringe and very fussy about how it’s cut). Anyway normal girl off sick at last minute and I get a different woman. She had the worst hair I’ve ever seen, terrible condition and a god awful fringe which really didn’t suit her. Looked like my 5 year old had hacked it for her. Felt like I obviously couldn’t back out once sat in the chair. Said I wanted a Frenchie fringe she didn’t have a clue what I was talking about. I froze and now have a ridiculously short and unflattering fringe like hers.

Would you use a hairdresser with terrible hair? I’m gutted as absolutely hate my hair now but she kept going on that it looked great (obviously her taste is very different to mine). Will go with my gut next time!

Take a picture next time

Surely a hairdresser’s haircut isn’t always representative of their own work? You can’t really cut your own hair!

BasketBlocks · 11/01/2022 19:10

I presume they don’t cut their own hair?

Mmmmdanone · 11/01/2022 19:12

My mum always used to say go to the hairdresser with the worst hair in the salon 🤣.

Cocomarine · 11/01/2022 19:15

Lots of fashion photographs have very short fringes, I’m not sure you get to choose what’s bad on her.
Honestly, if you’re so fussy about your complicated fringe then yes YABU to go ahead having it cut by someone who didn’t know what you were describing.
I get that it’s awkward to say no thanks to the replacement - but in that case you should have asked to trim only and leave fringe alone.
If you didn’t bring a photo, you may not have been clear about what you wanted.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 11/01/2022 19:18

This is ridiculous.

Would you buy from a butcher who sold rotten meat?

Why one earth would you not object and ask to rebook your appointment?

JustLyra · 11/01/2022 19:27

It's pretty common for people to have the worst of any of their trades surely?

I know a painter whose wife has threatened to pay someone else because she's been waiting so long for their house to be painted.

Same with a guy I know who is married to a woman who does that kitchen wrapping thing - she does amazing stuff on other people's, but their kitchen is half done and often used for trialling new stuff.

Plus it's not like a hairdresser can cut their own hair and it'll be sort of nervewracking to cut a hairdressers hair I bet. Like cooking for a chef - never fun!

While I agree that a hairdresser can’t cut their own hair (the old joke is that you should always have the hairdresser with the worst hair cut in the salon, because they obviously cut everyone else’s hair), she should be knowledgeable enough to know any haircut and fringe suits her. If she can’t choose a flattering cut/fringe for herself then you can’t trust her to know what suits you. Lesson learned unfortunately here op.

I had used the same hairdresser for 5 years, she would come to my home and gave the best colour I’ve ever had. She opened a salon in late 2019 (really bad timing for her) and I now have junior stylists in her salon because she trains them and they are the best and very well trained. I did once have a senior stylist in her salon do my hair, I was not happy and my friend fixed it. This person was not trained by my friend and now I know to either have one of the juniors that she has trained, or her.

Good hairdressers who you trust and can do an excellent job, are worth their weight in gold!!

In future only be seen by the person you know can do a good job on your hair.

I’ve had more than my fair share of awful haircuts 💐

Never heard of a French ie fringe…maybe be more specific about what you want next time.

Neron · 11/01/2022 20:43

YABU, and spiteful.

Lacedwithgrace · 11/01/2022 20:46

We need to see the fringe, OP.

TabithaTittlemouse · 11/01/2022 20:49

Even if she’s not cutting her own hair you would assume that she looks in the mirror and likes what she sees.
I wouldn’t have stayed for the cut, I think I would rather pay a non attendance charge.

1FootInTheRave · 11/01/2022 20:56

What's a french fringe?

BlueBottle46 · 11/01/2022 21:04

Not everyone wants a flattering haircut though. She might want a haircut she thinks is cool or edgy or she might just want to try a certain style on herself. Not everyone js going for most flattering hairstyle

It's pretty much the only hair you can be reasonably sure she didn't cut. I wouldn't worry about her hair. It's fair enough to complain about her hair cutting skills but to start a post about her fringe is a bit off

Brahumbug · 11/01/2022 21:12

My hairdresser has no hair at all, bald as a coot!😁

Agree. Graphic designer here. Children wanted me to design their invitations for their parties. I took so long getting it down that I just bought online invitations from Etsy.

CaptainCabinets · 11/01/2022 21:59

What is a Frenchie fringe? Confused

Do you mean like Frenchy from Grease? If so, that’s a horrible cut as it is and I can’t imagine many people would look good with it

Ohmycron · 11/01/2022 22:00

@1FootInTheRave
