To think the Met will do nothing about the Downing St parties and now seem corrupt

AIBU to think they won't do anything? Surely there were even police officers stationed in Downing St when it actually happened.

I feel sorry for all the decent hardworking Met police officers because the bad ones, and all of these scandals and the failure to be seeming to hold up the law (by those at the top) is really damaging faith in the police.

Yabu to put "seem" in the title.

Yanbu to raise this issue and keep it top of mind. People have got to start actively, collectively pushing back. All the time, everywhere, every day. Stop accepting shit from every single UK institution.

sirfredfredgeorge · 13/01/2022 08:40

The met police are corrupt yes.

Florianus · 13/01/2022 09:39

@jgw1

I don’t think you understand. There is no ‘order’. You get a list of visitors at the start of your shift and all the staff who work there have passes and can come and go as they please.

And come and go they would need to do in order to go out to buy booze for a bring your own party, or do they keep a stash under their desks just in case a party happens to take place that evening?

Having been a member of three Quangos over the years, I can confirm that large stashes of booze (along with Harrods' hampers) are always available for meetings.

Wes Streeting (Labour's Shadow Health Secretary) says the Downing Street party on 20th May should have been treated the same as the party on the very same day in Sandwell Street, Handsworth where around 100 attended a street party. West Midlands police broke up the party and told attendees to go home. There were no arrests and no fines issued.

Do people really want Met Police to take officers away from investigating rapes, stabbings, assaults etc. to investigate a party for which the likely conclusion would be no arrest, no fine.

Didn't stop the Met & many other Police forces from coming down very heavy handed on parties hosted by members of the public inc students, over 100k dished out in fines, i remember one student getting a 10k fine for having a party in her halls... & then getting chucked off her course, still paying off the student loan too.

No one should be seen to be above the law, inc the PM and as he (and others) have admitted being at a party, there is little to investigate.

roarfeckingroarr · 13/01/2022 13:02

I would prefer they focus on actual crime

What did Wes Streeting say about this indoor party held on 10 May 2020 in County Durham (10 days before the Number 10 'party')? Labour MP, Labour Mayor and police officer in attendance;

Whether or not the police at the gates had any responsibility, what about the ones who would have been watching the garden on cctv? They would have seen a party going on and yet they didn’t act?

Those officers should be disciplined. It seems the Met think laws don't apply in 10 Downing St.

They won’t do anything. They didn’t last time and I highly doubt they will this time

Diversion alert!

You ve banged on about 100 yo war veterans community celebration before.. its irrelevant, no reasonable person would begrudge a police authorised celebration of a man who has served his country..... it s not a piss up by a bunch of toffs in no10, which even bojo says was against the law.

Doomscrolling · 13/01/2022 16:26

The Met whose serving officers took selfies with murdered girls and put them on WhatsApp?

The Met whose serving officer abducted, raped and murdered Sarah Everard? With the workplace nickname The Rapist?

That Met?

Pure as the driven snow, clearly.

There are other "Mets" around, to be fair.

Met Office ?
New York Metropolitan Art Gallery ?
London Underground Metropolitan Line ?

Any one of which is more trustworthy (and capable) than the Metropolitan Police Force (I never bought into this "service" rebrand nonsense. If you have guns then you are a force)

Poetrypatty · 13/01/2022 17:36

Seems I was correct then as they've said just not they won't be doing anything about this unless Sue Grey says there was a crime Angry Angry Angry

The Met is famous, both within the service and without, for being corrupt. I'm amazed anyone sees this as a valid question.

Poetrypatty · 13/01/2022 19:23

But why are we just as a country sitting back and letting it happen? Surely something needs to be done.

Of course it's relevant to this thread - 40/50 people attended the celebration including a Labour MP. The Labour MP is on this list of MPs voting for Covid restrictions in the House of Commons;

www.theguardian.com/politics/ng-interactive/2021/dec/14/how-did-your-mp-vote-on-the-new-covid-restrictions

If County Durham Police have discretion to allow certain gatherings to go ahead, then why not the Met Police? From a health and safety point of view, several guests at the 100th celebration are in their 60s,70s,80s and were more likely to end up in hospital if they caught Covid in 2020 - plus the County Durham event took place indoors.

NB - I am just listening to Labour MP Barry Gardiner trying to explain why he has links with a 'Chinese spy' - if you want a diversion!!!

If you produce evidence that no10 sought permission from the Met beforehand for the party and they ok's it, then granted.

Damien Hinds Security Minister nailed it "this isn't about one MP or one political party......" and of course she isn't a spy, no matter how many times you keep repeating this slur.. if she were, she'd be arrested and charged as such.

longwayoff · 14/01/2022 08:04

Oh, a spy, how terrifying, please send for Brave Sir Boris to fend her off, he's the kind of guy who'll have a Trusty Sword of Truth tucked away for our defence. Meanwhile, MI5 should pop to Barnsrd Castle for a collective eye test if they've only just noticed the insidious Chinese influence that's been encouraged here over the past 20 years or more. Now, let's talk about Russia . . .

And it is reported this morning that the Sue Gray inquiry is not expected to have found evidence of any criminality.

What a surprise!! she has no legal training or expertise so was never going too... which is why she was appointed by Bojo, her employer, to investigate her boss and the arbiter of a PM's behavior is the PM of the day.

Remember how Bojo cleared Patel of bullying (even though the enquiry found otherwise) and that Patel has just renewed Dicks contract... who amazingly has decided not to even look at any law breaking in no 10.

What can be done by ordinary citizens if a police force is corrupt? Can anyone with any knowledge of legal stuff comment please?
LakieLady · 14/01/2022 09:17

@ItsSnowJokes

What do you mean NOW seem corrupt? They have been corrupt for years and years.
Yes, just ask the family of Daniel Morgan.
longwayoff · 14/01/2022 09:17

Ms Gray cant find evidence? Well I'm shocked. That's alright then, everyone move along, nothing to see here. See you at New Year Dame Sue.
