To think 90’s disaster movies are simultaneously terrible and amazing

Just watched Dante’s Peak and now moved on to Daylight. So cheesy terrible effects but it’s nostalgia central.

It's my favourite genre.

Have you seen "Don't Look Up"? All it needed was Bruce Willis and a big drill.

GrouchyKiwi · 11/01/2022 20:21

All of those films are amazing and I need more. Greenland is the best recent one.

suckingonchillidogs · 11/01/2022 20:22

Terminator 2 : Judgment Day - never get tired of it!

Ginger1982 · 11/01/2022 20:24

Con Air definitely

"Oh, nothing makes me sadder than the agent lost his bladder in the airplane!"

User478 · 11/01/2022 20:25

Did anyone see Earthquake 10.0? It was probably the best film I've ever seen.

I also like a monster disaster, hoping for several Meg films, I particularly like Jaws 3.

suckingonchillidogs · 11/01/2022 20:27

Does anyone remember a mini series from the 70s - The Night the Bridge Fell Down? Lesley Nielsen was in it, it was sooo good (and proper cheesy)

ArblemarchTFruitbat · 11/01/2022 20:32

@Ginger1982

Con Air definitely

"Oh, nothing makes me sadder than the agent lost his bladder in the airplane!"

Why didn't you put the bunny back in the box?

Hello my people!! waves to everyone on thread

I absolutely love cheesy ridiculous disaster movies. Such good entertainment. A lot of straight-to-TV disaster films are very similar to 90s cinema releases so I often hit record on those. I especially love spotting the clichés: estranged family that reconnects during adversity, maverick scientist that is initially discredited but turns out to be right in the end, incompetent government/military making awful decisions etc. etc. Love it!!!

For a non-disaster movie, I recently rewatched Broken Arrow and I’d forgotten how good John Travolta was in it!

NavaniKholinRocks · 11/01/2022 20:38

Also yes, Con Air is great! Anyone also like The Rock?

Sunshinegirl82 · 11/01/2022 20:41

I watched Armageddon recently (prompted by Don't look up!) and it was bloody brilliant! I'd forgotten how good it was!

"The American Government just asked us to save the World...anybody wanna say no?"

Classic!

Love an action film, DH sits through them very patiently (mostly!)

RonniePickering · 11/01/2022 20:42

I can watch anything with Nicolas Cage in tbh, his acting is... breathtaking...

BeefSupreme · 11/01/2022 20:57

I love Nicolas Cage. I will watch anything with him in it. There’s TWO Nic Cage films on tonight. How do I decide what to watch? (Ghost Rider or Joe.)

I also love Armageddon. I’m not ashamed to say I fancied Steve Buscemi after that. There’s a really shit Armageddon “ride” In Disneyland Paris, has anyone been on it?

I think I’ll download Dante’s Peak. I can’t believe I’ve never seen it.

SeeminglyOblivious · 11/01/2022 21:01

Another great Nic Cage one is Face Off...love it!

Plus I love anything with John Travolta in anyway, never not enjoyed something he's in.

Thorilicious · 11/01/2022 21:04

Not a disaster film, but 2 words...
Face.Off

GrouchyKiwi · 11/01/2022 21:06

Nic Cage is one of my Will Never Watch actors. Can't stand him. Grin

SeeminglyOblivious · 11/01/2022 21:06

I can't believe nobody has mentioned Daylight yet! Drop whatever you're doing and watch it right now grin

That bloody film is the reason I can't go on the Channel Tunnel without hyperventilating 🙄😂

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 11/01/2022 21:09

End of the world movies are my absolute favourite. They’re so bad they’re good (in a lot of instances!).

I’ve watched Twister about three times since it’s been on Netflix (or Prime, one or the other).

For all you fans, Roland Emmerich (him that directed The Day After Tomorrow and Independence Day) has a new movie out soon called Moonfall. It looks amazing.

MinnieJackson · 11/01/2022 21:34

@FourTeaFallOut I used to love deep blue sea! I want to watch it again Grin the main tough guy used to fall over EVERYTHING 😂 and it had Gary from friends and LL.cool J.
I like Hard Rain (or is it cold rain?) With Morgan Freeman.

Jaxhog · 11/01/2022 21:39

I loved 'The Day after Tomorrow', but my all-time favourite is 'Earth Girls are Easy' (It has Jeff Goldblum in it!)

Orangelover · 11/01/2022 21:40

Allll my favourites have been mentioned here Grin my Dad LOVES disaster films and I grew up on these in the 90s. Absolutely nothing can too Twister, Dante's Peak, Armageddon and Deep Impact for me.

Twister is probably my favourite for the amazing romance sub plot. And Helen Hunt is a little woman crush for me in that film.

Ahhh man they honestly don't make films as good as those any more Blush

TooManyPJs · 11/01/2022 21:59

I love a disaster movie too!!!

Hippopotas · 11/01/2022 22:33

I have to admit I haven’t seen Armageddon but I’m putting it on my list.

Armageddon is soooo good! You'll love it!
CovidCorvid · 11/01/2022 23:16

Love Armegeddon.

Moon fall looks great.

Not strictly a disaster movie but I do like Cliffhanger as well.

Dogmum40 · 11/01/2022 23:20
@Dogmum40It’s just so gloriously tongue-in-cheek (perhaps not the best turn of phrase for a film with Garland Greene in…..). The way they unveil an increasingly bad-ass list of criminals and you just know they are going to escape Grin
Haha! I always wished I was on con air when I used to fly 😆

Genuinely can’t imagine it being made today! Garland Greene sitting with a little girl playing with dolls would cause an uproar 😆
