Was this out of order ?

So today was the first time that I have tried to sell something on marketplace.
I put a new rug that we bought 2 months ago, it is a beautiful rug and I have paid £110 for it however I have changed my mind now and decided to change the style of the room .
Rug is (was) in perfect condition.
I have put it up for £20 hence it was used for the last 2 months so it isn't new anymore but I just thought I would have some money towards something else that was on my mind.

I had few people interested.
One lady was very interested, asked for my address and told me she would pick up tonight.
Today after I have given her my address she asked me if I could deliver to her instead for free as she's a single mother and doesn't drive.
I thought- why not...
She didn't live far, well 15 mins drive from us.
Before I left the house she asked me again if I could accept £15 instead of £20 as that's all she has right now because she needs to buy a new pram for her daughter .
I agreed again because everything was already planned and I let the other interested people know that's its pending .

Anyways. I got there and shes opened the door , I have gave her the rug and then she tells me " can I please have it for free as I dont have must flooring right now and J have a baby"
Now , I was shocked when she asked me and how she asked me and I just said yes whatever just take it then and she didn't even say thank you just closed the door.

I dont know what I am expecting right now.
I am just surprised, is this normal behaviour ?
I basically wasted my evening delivering to her , agreed the lower price then gave it away for free at the end.
I didn't expect a big thank you and flowers or anything like that but I just feel that she was so entitled .

Was this weird. ?
AIBU ?

Never ever agree to deliver. Even if they don't try anything on, they might forget you're coming, or change their mind, or forget to take out cash, so you'll be wasting your time. Cash on collection only!

tectonicplates · 10/01/2022 20:37

You've learned your lesson, so you won't fall for this again next time.

RedCandyApple · 10/01/2022 20:38

Well I voted YABU for being such a push over! Wow

maddening · 10/01/2022 20:39

I would have just said no and left with my rug, cf piss takers !

BrutusMcDogface · 10/01/2022 20:40

I’ve voted yabu because honestly, you were a complete mug! Bless you; hopefully you’ve learned a lesson. She was a very VERY cheeky fucker.

Jjjayfee · 10/01/2022 20:43

Don't blame yourself. You are the kind person and she is the one who should be ashamed. Be proud of what you did but don't be so gullible next time.

Dibbydoos · 10/01/2022 20:44

She was a disgusting cheeky cow. Tgats nit normal and no way should you have agreed to all that. One of the others who wanted the rug would have had the rug off you.

ShadowGirls · 10/01/2022 20:45

Welcome to the world of Facebook marketplace

godmum56 · 10/01/2022 20:47

@LAURAMINIMAQ88

I am .....and was ! trying to convince myself that she was just a mother in need but after reading your thoughts, I feel like a total mug and idiot.
take the lesson and move on. I am on a collectible toy sales group on FB and its a common sad story that someone negotiates a price reduction with a sob story then asks to pay in instalments because yadda yadda...then asks for it to be sent before its paid off because sick child's birthday, special holiday, mum has dementia....any old pony....then the seller gets no more installments. You got a cheap lesson.....some of the collectibles sold on the group go for hundreds!
2DogsOnMySofa · 10/01/2022 20:47

I'm afraid you've just been taken for a mug... but you live and learn.

RainbowBridge21 · 10/01/2022 20:48

She played you and knew exactly what she was doing. Why on earth did you hand over the rug?!

WestendVBroadway · 10/01/2022 20:49

Actually I had a lady buy something form me that I had advertised on FB market place. I delivered it as she couldn't fit it in her small car and I was passing her house on the way to my DM's. She gave me an extra £5.
Natty13 · 10/01/2022 20:50

You know, when I'm selling something and people try this kind of thing I think "who the hell falls for this?! What is even the point of them asking as clearly I will say no"

Well, TIL people will believe anything.

AutumnLeaves21 · 10/01/2022 20:50

YABU for being a total mug and a pushover

ChipsAndKetchup · 10/01/2022 20:51

Don't beat yourself up you did a nice turn it's on them that they are greedy arseholes.

I once responded to a Facebook plea from a local mum for a decent pram for her kid. I took pity and gave away my lovely silver cross. I even delivered it to her house. When I knocked on the door her husband asked me to put it in the outdoor cupboard. When I opened it, it was full of prams. He stood there smirking. I didn't know how to deal with it so just put the pram in and went home feeling like a mug.

madisonbridges · 10/01/2022 20:52

No, its not weird, it's unfortunately totally normal behaviour on FB. Put your stuff up for sale; say you don't deliver; say the price is non-negotiable. She's probably selling it on as we speak at 50 quid.
I'd have rather dragged it home on foot than have let her have it. CF.

SD1978 · 10/01/2022 20:54

Yes I've learned. She was lying the whole time, and now you know not to lower your price or deliver. I don't engage when that crap starts. Buy it or don't, I don't care. I also don't care whatever your made up sob story is.

Jonagirl · 10/01/2022 20:55

Another one who voted Yabu just because you were such a pushover. You really need to work on saying no. Definitely weird alright but the weird thing was you just letting her walk all over you. I feel bad saying that because you are clearly a nice person but seriously for your own sake stay off marketplace 🤣

iloveayankeecandle · 10/01/2022 20:56

That will be on marketplace for sale straight away!!
If you have any local groups then I'd screen shot the chat and tell everyone to watch out and that's shes a scammer. I'd also be tempted to go back to hers and ask for it back!

HikingforScenery · 10/01/2022 20:57

Wow! Sounds like you’ve been scammed. Sorry OP

errnerrcallnernnernnern · 10/01/2022 20:59

🤦🏻‍♀️

SergeantCatFlap · 10/01/2022 21:01

Scammed - and it was planned from the beginning. Chalk it up to experience and move on.

yellowsmileyface · 10/01/2022 21:04

Don't beat yourself up over it. You're obviously a kind person and unfortunately kind people get taken advantage of.

I think she was relying on a commitment bias that once you'd made the effort to drive to her, you'd be more easily persuaded to hand it over for free. She was manipulative.

See it as a learning experience, and take on board the advice so as to not let it happen again.

You are not an idiot. You are a nice person who was doing what they believed to be a nice thing. You were scammed by someone who lives in a moral-free zone.

Let it go now but yes this is what FB marketplace is like. As soon as the sob stories start, I block.
