Is a glass staircase a bad idea? Does anyone have one?

I have three boys, we need to replace our 40 year old cheap stair case because it's grim. Because of the structure, vertical spindles is difficult.

We are considering glass panels.

Is that a really bad idea?

@PinchOfVom

A fancy glass coffee table exploded in our house, we were living in a hot country and it was 44c so that was why.

It frightened the life out of us and took a long time to forget (middle of the night)

But how on earth do they exploded in a country with temperate climate?

Faults in the glass apparently. Mine went boom one night in November, I thought a firework had come through the window. Nightmare cleaning the bloody thing up, was finding chunks of glass for the next 12 months.

Everyone told me I was mad for getting this on some of our staircases with two small kids but it honestly hadn't been anywhere near as bad as I expected for smudgy fingerprints. The living room windows end up much worse (which DOES drive me mad).

Tbh a quick spray of vinegar and wipe with a microfibre cloth is easier than having to dust endless spindles with all of their nooks and crannies.

If it's just because the staircase is dark, get a light well put in your ceiling. It makes a huge difference.

We have one of these. A quick wipe over with a damp cloth followed by Karcher window vac and they're done. Really less hassle than horrible dusty spindles.

Had ours at least 10 years.. no regrets at all

Glass panelled staircases look like you couldn't afford to refit the office your home used to be. I cringe when I see them house hunting.

They feel dated, very popular in the early 2000’s. I wouldn’t put one in now.

My friend had one put in her cottage about a year ago. It is perfect and absolutely transformed the place. On tbe back of seeing it a couple of other friends are having theirs done. Either it isnt dated or we have a lot catching up to do where we live!!

I hate dusting round spindles with twee profiles, we had some in a house we bought.

Spindles do not have to be ornate, ours are just plain with a subtle twist.

I think the bigger point is who dusts spindles on a staircase!

We've got them. I definitely don't clean them weekly. Nobody is touching the glass when they go up and down the stairs.

I have one in a modern house interior. Definitely not dated- I've seen them in houses of all ages. Obviously, taste is personal. Surprisingly doesn't get very dirty either, I certainly don't clean it very often. It gets nothing like as dirty as the patio door glass from sticky hands and wet dog noses.

Ours was made in 1 solid piece of glass and its two sheets laminated together- about 2cm thick in total. A wooden handrail slots over the top. It was cheaper than the wooden options we looked at actually and let's plenty of light in.

The only negative is my mother in law worries a little that she doesn't have spindles to grab on to if she was to slip and fall.
